Yes, one of my salesman's got a diesel one, it's excellent, he covered 22k miles in 9 months with no problems & the car's been well exercised !!
The speed of gear change is phonominally quick - tell your uncle to go test drive one :D

Test drove a GTi with DSG a year ago. Liked almost enough to buy it - but then I reminded myself that if was a VW and walked away!!

Whats wrong with VW? it seems that the press all say good things about the GTi , what made you walk away?

I work at VW Reading. The DSG is a very good gearbox. Given the chance take one out and see what you think. Since the DSG has been out we have only replaced 3 boxes here due to problems. John who works with Ice Cold has DSG in his Caddy and he thinks its great.

they don't have any test car over here :( , so does the DSG have some kinf of launch control like the BMW? I know that you work at VW and you might don't wanna tell , but what are Golf weaknesses ? what usually goes wrong ...ect or is solid as a rock?

The DSG is two manual gearboxes working together under automatic control. It changes gear within within 500ths of a second by switching from one box to the other. The box is fitted with two wet clutches.Basicly if you have your foot planted to the floor it dosent hang about! They tried fitting launch control to a dsg in a couple of Audi TTs and put them through a workshop wall. The mk 5 golf suffers from door seal problems, Manual versions have a recall on clutches. The early GTIs had sealing problems on the front screens. The steering racks have been playing up!! Just a few problems!! They are still a good car though despite some teething problems. The R32 is a great toy!!:)

What are your thoughts on the R32 ? it comes with DSG? as my uncle went to the dealer and they are getting a batch of car in 2 weeks with the first R32s coming(they never broguht them here before) so I'm trying to convince him to pay a bit extra to get that :D

The new R32s in terms of power are great. I personally dont like the chromed front end. The 32 does come with the option of DSG and also paddle shift control which is very effective. Konig seats are now an option and not standard like the Mk4. The new 32 also has center exit twin exhaust which is a bit clio sport looking. In terms of handling they have got it spot on. The car does everything itself. To date the only faults we had on a new R32 was a faulty cup holder and trims!! You wont be dissapointed with this car.

so teh DSG on the GTi doesn't have peddle shift? or could the R32 come with DSG without peddal shift?

I was really impressed with the everyday useability and smoothness of changes of DSG over SMG but when really pushing on the DSG to me left me feeling cold and icelated from the action.

It doesn't have that feel that SMG has which provides information as to what the drivetrain and engine are upto.

Adood definatly tell you uncle to drive both the R32 and GTi.

For me the R32 is a great everyday quick car if your uncle bought one he wouldn't be dissapointed.

For me my R32 is better for the manual gearchange, it really is crisp and has a satisyfying feel to it, plus you can really abuse the AWD with a manual.

the thing is at is going to be an everyday car , and he'll be going through traffic...ect he doesn't want a manual , as he has a 911 C4 which is maunual , I think the DSG is the best option its not Auto , and its a clutchless manual :D
