apart from the dvd what are the main differences??

The 310 is over double the price of the 1014 - is it worth it??

Get the 310, its way more expandable ( ie future-proof) . Oh, it also has a touchscreen !!!!

the in built dvd player make a major diffenrence. also the d310 has a lot more features for expanding and has a full front, rear and subwoofer preouts.

the d310 is better suited for alpines touch ready navigation system.

Go with the 310. I have one and it is excellent. Great source unit to run the rest of your system off. The touch screen is excellent and the in built DVD is exceptional. As Andy has said, you can expand your system very easily using the 310.
