Hi Andy,
I hear you're the guy to ask this sorta stuff to ;)
I'm building an installing my own carputer. Carputer will have its own FM Tuner/TV card so I am ditching the headunit all together.
I also want to replace the standard speakers in the car. Its an e36 328i btw. Has to remain stock looking though. I would also like the option to add a sub at a later stage so the amp would need to facilitate this.
Can you help with some recommendations as I don't have a clue to start. I don't really have a budget either. I don't need the absolutely best sound in the world like Dr. Nick :) but just something that is a lot better than stock and I will notice the difference if you get me?
Thanks for your time Andy :)

You can get new components up front 5.25" (13cm), rear are 10cms. Infinity and Alpine are pretty decent. Ive just got rid of my Type-X 13cms, upgrading to 16cm, although these will require custom pods.

hello mate,
it looks like an awesome project you are creating so good luck with it. as for the headunit thing, i would still use a headunit in conjunction with the carputer as the sound from the carputer will only be a stereo two channel where as the headunit could provide you with a front, rear and subwoofer output to give you fade control aswell as sub control.it will also give you a good remote turn on signal for your amps.
as uber bmw has stated, the oem size for the front of you car is 13cm. there is an allocation for a component speaker system as standard so i would use it. concerning brand, i would go with a set from someone like jl audio or focal.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply. I'm your man when it comes to computers but when it comes to audio, i'm an idiot :)
Ok so you think I should keep the headunit? Can you recommend a headunit that suits the requirements and speakers for both the front and rear? Does the e36 have tweeters? If so, I'll need them too. Oh and the amp :) And not forgetting your price for the components!
Uber thanks for the info mate :)

any of the mid to high end alpine units will do a very good job. use the aux in feature on them and you good to go. as for speakers and amps. they start from about £400 for a nice set and go up from there. how much did you want to spend on them?

Hi Andy,
I was thinking about 700 - 1000 quid? What can you get me for that sort of money?

for about a £1000 i can get you a set of the mid range jl comps and an amp to run them. i can also get you a subwoofer(10 or 12) and an amp to run that, jl audio aswell. for the headunit, something like the alpine cda-9854r with the kce 121b aux interface for the carputer. it has front, rear and sub output for the amp and a great sound. pm me if you want me to get this for you.
