My car was overheating... so i drenched it with a hose pipe :(

Now when i come to turn it on, i get this knocking feeling from the engine.

Anyway it sounds like it was drowning!

How do i resolve this problem.. keep turning it or do a take of one of the spark plugs and get the engine to spit out the water!

did u hose into the air intake? if not, i can't see how the engine has sucked any water in.

it would of been very minimal (throttle butterfly closed)

Sprayed over the spark plugs - would of trickled in?

(was aiming for the cast iron plate?!(sump!))

maybe take the ht leads out and make sure no water in the spark plug chamber

taken off the HT leads... cant see but the ends are definately wet.

Do i get a cloth a dry em off?!

Or take out completely?!

Cheers

best if u can blow it out using an air gun...

in any case, what`s teh root cause of the oberheating? your thermostat/waterpump/trapped air...???

You should never spray any cold water over anything hot, causes severe damage to the metal...!!! Same when you top up the radiator, should only ever be a cold engine for the same reason...

I really do hope you haven't done any serious damage...

Agree with the others, cold water on a stinking hot engine is very very bad. Can cause the head to warp, crack, blocks to crack etc. Get it checked over by a competent mechanic.

I'll be surprised if you haven't cracked the block... Crazy thing to do dude, never pour anything cold on anything that's very hot. Basic physics.

OMG
madness- you've prob cracked the block, prob done the rad in as well if you drenched it when it was roasting

on your next car just switch it off and let it cool down naturally!

I thought it was common knowledge not put cold water an hot engine , on a normal temp engine you don't do it , I could only guess the damage when the car is overheated , it usually results in some kind of crack get it cjeck as teh other say ..... hope you get lucky and its only something small

i think your engine will be fine unless u`ve been really unlucky. a sock in an engine is much more silly! just get rid of water from the spark plugs as that`s the usual culprit. as per my earlier point, u need to track down what`s causing the initial overheating in the first place.

Yeah so anyway, I would suggest you get all of the electronical ignition part checked. Check the plugs, leads, (that car doesn't have a dizzy cap) and maybe check the coil packs - connections mainly I guess. Actually, not sure about the coil packs, I dunno if they hold a dangerous charge to be playing with leads, don't know on that oen mate. Is it just a lumpy idle or lumpy through the whole rev range? What kind of a knocking feeling is it? Does it sound metallic? Does the knocking get louder or quiter once up to operating temperature? As much info as possible mate, although I don't realllly know what to suggest.

Just check all the ignition connections and if that doesn't do it, get it checked out by a mechanic. Given the possible severity I would suggest you don't drive more than you have to. May also be worth checking oil levels and such like, if you've cracked the head, oil loss maybe a tell-tale sign of worse things.

Best of luck with it mate, let me know how it goes,

Shuriken.

ps. Don't do it again! :p

right then gents...

Yes i sprayed the whole engine bay down...:o but i was panicking!
anyway wont be doing that again.

thanks for the jokes there boys.

But you may or may not be relieved to know that the problem has been resolved. :D:D:D

I just took the spark plugs out and let it dry out all day...seemed to have worked!

HOWEVER with regards to damage ... my idle has gone nuts bouncing up and down - up to 1,600 rpm. (I would probably have said my throttle cable needs adjusting)

But now my bonnet catch is F****ed so i cant do anything!

Its been a good weekend - how was yours? :p

glad everything worked out , I hope people on the forum know that you don't wash your engine with cold water when its hot , and generally avoid washing the engine lol to many electronic stuff around it these days lol

Well good news it's running !!:D
Just got to get a few minor issues sorted then.
If that's all you've got to sort then you have been real lucky:cool:

If idle is all over the place, check your ICV / MAF connections, ICV causes slow idle settling on any cars that have it, but yours may have MAF instead. That's still gonna have an electrical connection though, so you may want to check it.

You still need to find what caused the overheating in the first place though.

Shuriken.

The idling should settle down once everything has dried up.....

lesson learnt the hard way bro. but left hand is surprisingly good. the grip strength has improved nicely.
