I have just installed my two sealed enclosure subs in my e46 saloon.
I am disappointed to say the least, due to obvious reasons the bass levels are much lower that in my previous hatch back.

I just want to know what can be done to enhance the bass? i will shortly be dynamatting the boot.

But for the mean time, what direction do you guys fire your subs?

I found that firing the subs faing the front of the car produces the loudest bass.

I was told that due to the nature of low frequency sound waves that the ear hears it better with the speaker pointing away from you. i.e. toward the rear of the car.

I totally agree though the boots in these BM's are pretty sealed up. I had my W7 in the factory H.O. box in my Jeep and the bass used to come over the back of the rear seats and just slap me in the face. Blurry vision with my head reverberating.

No doubt Dynamatting helps with the refection of the wave toward you up front, so that should improve tings when you do that.

I've a coupe and I whopped out the stock rear deck speakers AND thier holders which allowed more air into the cabin. Definately an improvment. Also if you look up (from inside your boot) at your rear deck there are 2 circular shaped cut outs in the metal (for the HK system I believe) bosh them out too, it definately lets more rumble through.

Finally if you have the ski-pass fold your arm-rest down and open that. If you dont actually have the 'ski-pass' then just fold your armrest down and bosh that metal panel out with a hammer. Theres a DIY for that part on e46Fanatics I think.

Should be sounding much better after that. Worked for me. I've now so much thump that I am considering turning DOWN the gain on my bass amp recently, coz the girlies dunn like it. Damn...am I mad? :(

Peas and love Bro....

thanks for that write up dude,

Also, will porting make a huge diff?

Sealed box firing forwards with a port through the rear seats will give you max bass for sure. I recently turned my box around to try them facing forward through the port and the difference was astonishing. Guess what my next ICE project includes... ;)

Your welcome breadwin. :)

If your talking about porting your sealed box, yeah the bass will sound different. It would be less tight/sharp/punchy overall I would say, and sounding like the notes go on a little longer. It's less accurate ported I guess but there would be more output overall.

I'd try removing some of the material between your boot and cabin as I mentioned above firstly. You might be impressed and it won't cost jack.
