Hi,

I picked up my car about a month ago and its now bout due to have an inspection 2 service.

Its a 98 R reg and up til now has always been serviced by a main $tealer. My question is, im going to keep the car for about 4 years by which time it will be about 12 years old, im not going to go down the main $ealer route as i would never get the money back i fork out on it but do i

a) Go to a BMW specialist - i know the owner and they do a good job

or

b) Do i go to another person i know who has a garage - its not a specialist but he is an old school mechanic that does the job and would probably spend more time on the car

What will it do to the resale value of the car in about 4 years or by that point will it be that old it wont matter aslong as it has been looked after?

There isnt a huge amount of difference in the price between the two

Quotes:

Dealer £445 (for comparison)
Specialist £285
Mechanic £220

I dont mind spending the money looking after the car, so it not a penny pinching exercise just want to know what effect it will have? [hmm

take it where you feel most comfortable with

i would take it to a specialist...they have the knowledge and diagnostic software to do the job. the stamp will look also prove that you have looked after the car very well.

local garage can do the job and stamp the book, but keep hold of receipts for everything that has been replaced which comes in handy when you want to sell it

Yeh, knowing the specialist personally sounds the best option. Dealers dont give an ish

As above really. Use a good specialist that you trust. If he has the correct diagnostics equipment, he will be able to pinpoint just about anything thats wrong. [cool

A basic mechanic could spend hours replacing things on a suck it and see basis.

On a 12 year old car that will be 2 generations old, don't think it'll make any difference to the resale value no matter where you go to. If I were you, I would take my car to the people whom I know will do a good job, and will use the cheapest one. So that I know the car will be reliably mantained for my own convenience during my period of ownership.

Shouldn't be too much different from the E39 M5. Inspection 2 would see you part with just under a grand.

been quoted 1450 for my "6" - got it cut down to 1250. Still not a happen bunny - should've got an M5 - cheaper to ensure and more economical than the "6". But looking on the bright side, I've booked for a POWER upgrade on her. Quotes flying my way = 200mph possible and 0-60's in 3.9!!!! Happy days'll be here again.
