is it finished?

Having waited a year, I'd have waited another day or two to get the right colour carpet Lee....

The wheel cut-out is different and with an ACS3 it works, nice idea. I'd have gone all the way round with it though, and then fitted a sub or two back out of sight - that sub looks like what it is, a fat speaker that wouldn't go underneath the rear shelf so is stuck out looking half-fitted.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, I think you've had 2 big ideas there and one is novel and looks great whereas the other one ruins the first and spoils the overall look IMO.

not exactly finished yet, gonna have perspex over the wheel, and need to get the wheel fitted a little better. And light up the wheel at night too.

the speaker did sit under the top of the boot before i covered the floor in carpet! :(
I'm also gonna box the cd changer in and put a cover over first aid kit.

i will look into it some more, but i've had enuff for today, i'm sunburnt all across my back, oops!

Dude, seriously, shave some off the underside of that box and get it back under the shelf. It looks like you're shoving a sub in your boot to drop off at a mate's on the way home. :o Push it back into the boot and it'll highlight the wheel cut-out (which you could go all the way round with if you're gonna light it up). Just what I'd do, kudos for DIYing it though.

There are 3 ways to approach a boot install. Sound only, show only or a little of both. For sound only, you don't really care how it looks, as long as it sounds good. Vice-versa for show only. However, I would think the majority would go for the last option.

The exposed wheel is a great idea but the way the sub-box is mounted looks like a hurried job, making do with whatever stuffs you had in hand and IMO totally spoils the idea you have with the wheel display.

If you could fabricate a custom box that blends into one half of the boot, you can still have the same Kicker sub mounted. However, mount it directly to the left and above the wheel half, at an angle facing slightly upwards and firing to the side of the boot (towards the CD changer). You create a slope effect, the sub then the wheel. You can then light up the wheel and at the same time, aim the light beam towards the centre of the sub. How cool is that!

Plus you can still use the space in the boot above the wheel

A stepped box gives enough depth for the speaker to have the 1.2cubic foot it will need to run properly, and the speker will fit in the box low enough to have the clearence needed to miss the step so as to fit under the lip of the hood.

I did the same with my E30 with 2 solobarics, will try and dig some pics of it out for you...

cheers guys, it's the finished version, but needed to it to see how it looks!

i've had the box for as long as i've had the car pretty much. it's a resin box and cost me quite alot of money! I would love to be able to afford to an install like some of you e46 boys have got, but on my wages, - not a hope in hell! :(

i know it looks a little out of place being a big black box in a sea of grey! one day once it all fits better, i want to think about an all black retrim in the whole boot, i think that would make it look less out of place, but then i'm not sure if that would look wrong as i have silver leather inside the car!

but i kinda like it still!

I'll guess we'll have to wait and see how it pans out.

You would be surprised how cheap you could actually finish that for. MDF isn't that expensive, and a little bit of fibreglass to line the box and seal it properly, the carpet and spray glue.

I'd bet money it wouldn't come to more than £100 to do it yourself....

Take the measurements and get the wood pre-cut, so not much work to do for the box either....

what do you mean to finish it off exactly?

Sit the box back into the space under the hood, trim the panels in the right colour, build you panel for cd changer and firt aid kit and buy the plexiglass etc.

The bits you are going to do anyway, and getting the sub back where it should be. Most subs need to have space from the cone itself, and for the kicker, while you need 1.2 cubic feet of ait, you should also have a minimum of 8" from the back panel, otherwise you will have air forced back against the speaker and you will get distortion.

Convertible BMW's are 1 of the hardest cars to get bass into at the best of times.....

Fair play for doing it yourself ! Its never easy sorting out an install, especially with the limited space with a convertible.

Bet it sounds like a monster too - looks massive! :D
