View Full Version : Which car to go for?

my younger brother wants a car,
he just got his license, 18 years old.

the first choice he told me was E46 M3, i was like "what?"

then i have made up the following list of cars for him to choose:

Audi TT
Mini Cooper +/-
Audi A3 Sportback
Z4 3.0
SLK200K
M3 SMGII
330Ci Facelift

wondering which car should he go for, any comment?

personally i suggested him the mini cooper, since it's smaller and quick enough.

but what about in the low maintenance way? i suppose he will scratch his car.
i don't think money is a problem for him and he wants a car that he can show off around, in silver or white colour.

i guess he wants a sporty and classy car, a car easy to handle and especially automatic(+/-).

please also teach me ways to persuade him on how to choose his car.

[bang If you love your brother you'll slap him and tell him hes getting a 1 litre Micra .

Ps my brother thinks hes getting a M3 and hes 15  [bang [thumbsdow

Im considering whether i should give him the 1.3 Fiesta or a 1 litre Micra, i'm favouring the Micra.

and no i'm not cruel or tight, i have a little bit or brains and experince with high powered cars.

Thats some list for somebody who has just passed their test  , don't you think a cheap runaround would be better?, it just needs to look fast. What about a 1.6 mini one with the cooper alloys fitted ?...

I'm with Raj and Paul on this one. I personally wouldn't recommend most of those to him even if he can afford them. The biggest problem will be that with only passing your test you will be very easily persuaded to put your foot down at the most ridiculous times. Statistically, he is very likely to have a smash within his first year of passing his test, and if this is the case, the last thing you want is for him to have something very highpowered to run around in. Get something with less power and use the extra cash to mod it. There is plenty of time for him to move onto high performance cars in the future.

why not just get a mini copper and do all the Jhon Works mods on it interior and extrior , there are loads of stuff to change to works package from exhuast to dash trims

I'm thinking 316 with the motorsport kit

does this appeal to your brother?

My first car after I passed my driving test was a 1984 Volvo 244GL estate, which I drove for 2 years. That was the only car my parents were prepared to buy me. An 18 year old will always be an 18 year old, and thinking back on what I did, I am glad I got a tank.

Wow  , as MistaSmiff has said, that is some list of cars for a new driver.

My first car was a Fiesta 1.1L, which was regularly thrashed and occasionally bumped within the 12-18 months I had the car. My next car was my first Capri 2.8 Injection, I wrote it off within the first 6 months :( , basically down to lack of driving experience and the '' No Fear '' approach of an 18 year old....

Forget about the bling, be sensible and buy something sensible. ;)

Will he get insured on any of those on the list - doubtful. He needs to learn roadcraft and not learn to show off to his mates. A driver fresh from L plates and a high powered car, hmm, let me know when he is on the road so i can stay off. No offense but people like myself who carry kids in their cars don't need unnecessary exposure to danger on the roads. Of course he may be sensible but with those list of cars I know at 18 i wouldn't have been.

i had a 1.3L F reg rusty blue colour, no pas, no disc brakes , no heater, no radio. regularly needed home servicing.

and you know what i hated it at 17, but looking back 5 years on i loved that jallopy and had many great memories. Also made me appreciatte / enjoy the better cars i have had the fortune of enjoying in life.

not sure who is paying for your brother's first car, but buying a high powered car as a first car is irresponsible. you brother may claim to be a 'good driver' but stats are unfortunately stacked against him. i too thought i was invincible until I wrecked my first car within 4 months, although it was only a Nova 1.2 that cost me a grand.

In a way it depends on his driving expreience.
Get a lil car for first 3 months to get use to the roads and that.
Then i reckon he is ok to upgrade to some thing nice!
Advice will be take the car control course as tin said to me!

I would definately agree , no way should a new driver be allowed in anything near as powerful as the cars listed, that is just plain irresponsible

Start him off in a small engined car for at least the first year of driving, try and fit in some courses (skid pan, car control etc) ;) .

For the first 18 months I was driving Escort MKII's and a Uno 1.3SX until I felt happy to buy a Astra GTE MkI (not mega powerfull but still fast in it's day :D )

Cheers

Everyone has covered the too powerful point but how are you planning on insuring him with those cars? 17 year old in an M3, good luck. I'm 18 and last time I checked, I can't get anything over 2 litres. Even then, not as a first car mate seriously.

316 has a little bit of grunt to humiliate the local chavs but isn't gonna go crazy. Serious considerations should be made for his safety though. It probably doesn't really matter what car it is anyway, most people love their first car whatever it is. :)

i think it should be illegal for anyone driving a sub 10second (0-60) car in their first year of driving (irrespective of age).

i think about the really stupid stuff i did when i was 17, and i was the 'sensible' one out my mates.

I agree it's irresponsible to allow anyone of that age to drive something powerful, it's not just the

My first car? Fiesta 1.0L - wrote it off in three months.

Second car? Another Fiesta 1.0L - wrote that off 6 months later.

Third car? Escort 1.3 - lasted nearly a year before a Land Rover proved to me I shouldn't drive through an amber light :(

Will always have a knackered left knee from the bit of centre console that was embedded into my patella from the impact, but I was sooo lucky - if i had been carrying a front seat passenger they certainly would have been killed.

And I don't drive like an idiot now, so am happy to have (and can afford to insure) a powerful car. Haven't got any points on my licence and have never ever had a speeding ticket (but that might be helped by my Road Angel)

I'll stop being a preachy old git now, but I learned from my mistakes and was very lucky not to have been seriously hurt, and more importantly never hurt anyone else.

Seriously - don't let an inexperienced driver have a lethal weapon - there are good reasons for insurance being that high for car that powerful.
