Well I went out this morning started the car , I let warm up for like 45sec-1min reversed out of the garage , then I look at the dash and the gearbox lights up , I start moving I stop at the signal , I decide to switch the car off and back on , the car went died I turn the key and nothing so I take the key out I call BMW service , and while I'm talking to them and giving them info for the car to get toed I try to switch the car on and it does with gearbox sign gone ... I drive heading to the dealer at another traffic light I stop and put the gearbox in N and then it goes green so I shift it into D and the sign comes back on and the car shifts jerkily when shifting down while braking , I reach the dealer safely , I get the service manger out and the workshop foreman..... and they tell me it might be that the battery has lost power which caused the gearbox to go into safety mode thing   ??! or it might be an electronic problem within the gearbox selection lever thing? what do you guys think? could it be the battery , the car is about 19 month old :( :( :(

I'm hoping it would be some small electronic glitch or some kind of sensor , because the warnning light goes and comes after a bit , while I was taking my stuff out of teh car swtiched it on again and it was gone and I did like 10+ random shifts between P , R , N, and D and after that it came on..... will see 2moro what have they done

well they seem to suspect 2 parts and they will confirm 2moro , its either some kind of gearbox control unit or the selection gear electronics , and the worst thing is those 2 parts are not available in Saudi which means I have to wait for them for about 10-14 days to come from Germany which means I have to let my CAI kit sit in front of me :( , they are going to give me an X3 on Thursday as a loaner car but it just isn't the same :(

Well, if you do that to it on a regualar basis i'm not surprised.

Better for the life of the box if you keep it in D at traffic lights. The torque converter is designed to stay in D when stationary, and would only overheat if you sat there for hours. Despite the temptation, you are actually wearing the box out more by making unnessary shifts than just leaving it in D.*
*Leaving it in D does piss off people behind you due to brake lights! ;)

Well the problem is when keeping it in D there is a little vibration which pisses me off when stationary and it goes when its in N , the dealer said that isn't a problem and is normal , so I put it in N

I have an update the dealer couldn't get hold of an X3 today so I'll have to wait till saterday , but I have some good news I won't have to wait for the part as they have found an unsold new car and they are taking the part of that and fitting on my car I hope this solves the problem and the car would be with me on sunday , if changing the part doesn't solve the problem they are going to order a new gearbox
