I've always thought that the best way to break-in the engine was to follow the manufacturer notes but...i came across this: [read

Ive never broke any of my cars in, just drove as normal from brand new.
Ive never had any major problems with them either. With my last car i had tuned at AMD they said the harder the cars had been drove the higher the bhp outputs they were seeing.

The worst thing to do with a brand new engine, is let it labour. From what I've gathered with the 330, the ones that consume a lot of oil, were not run-in properly and not driven hard enough.
I wouldn't exceed the max rpm that is stated in the manual either. BMW can read max rpm readings etc.
Nor does it help that the cars come of the production line with long life oil.
I going to keep mine between 2500-4500 rpm for the first 1000 miles. Then with each additional 100 miles, increase the revs by 500 rpm until I get to the red line. Then I shall give the car a thorough cane to limit through the gears :D
Oil and filter change after 1 yr or 10,000 miles.

I've never bought a brand new car but I've had loads of brand new bikes. Track bikes are pre-run usually and stripped fairly often so running-in doesn't really apply to them, but I always ran my road bikes hard from about 50 miles onwards. I swear they were quicker, looser and had noticeably more grunt than other new bikes I rode that had been run in as per the handbook. I'm talking 325-to-330 noticeable to use a familiar comparison, not ever-so-slightly-quicker.
Like I say, I can't speak for cars with authority, and I've not bought a brand new bike for a few years cos I've been into the cars, but I'll never run a bike any other way than how I intend to ride it for it's lifetime - hard. Never had anything adverse happen and the difference really is very noticeable.
