View Full Version : A day with the M3

I've driven the M3 for a day now and what a car!!! This is my first ever ownership of an M car and the E46 M3 is simply THE best car I've ever driven. Not because I've just spent some money on it and it has to be good but it really is that good [ok
Normally I would have posted threadful of pictures of my new toy but this time I have no time for the camera. I just can't stop driving it! I've done 300 miles since yesterday and gone through a tankful of Optimax. The S54 is truely a gem, and that SPORT button!! Totally transform the way the car drives; as if 50BHP just appeared from nowhere from just a push of a button. Keep the revs between 2000 and 4500RPM, the engine pulls hard in virtually every gear. Swing the rev needle towards the 8200RPM redline and it'll make the hair in the back of your neck stand. With every gearchange, you'll be pinned to the back of the seat. Totally addictive!!
I've driven a few cars with more horsepower than the M3, somehow I get the feeling that I'm going much faster in the M3 at any given speed. I supposed it's the way the engine delivers the power, very peaky and that metallic noise from the exhaust adds to the entertainment. Another thing I found with the M3 is that the chassis produces a lot more grip than my 330. Even in slightly damp condition, I hardly saw the DSC light flash under acceleration. Whereas on my S/Ced 330, stab the throttle and the traction control will kick in in no time. The LSD contributes significantly to this.
Test driving the M3 only gave me a taste of what the car could do. The stiff gearchange and shift point take some getting used to and having driven an SMG car for the past 2 years didn't help. However, now I've got used to it the M3 has a lot more to offer.
I must say I've made the correct decision going for the M3 instead of the other shortlisted candidates that are the Z4 3.0i, E60 545i, C55 AMG and CLK 55 AMG. Plus I can put the experience I gained from modding my 330 to very good use and turn my M3 into a fantastic vehicle both to the eye and to drive
Watch this space ....more mods going on tomorrow ;)

Congrats on the new car buddy. I was looking for a post from you all day, but am actually happy that you spent time driving the car and not posting about it until now :)
Can't wait to see it in the flesh. Congrats again. And I may as well tell you, I'm as jealous as hell :(
Now you know what you've been missing all this time Nick
I think you've got the "M3 bug" now....where you just have to drive it. :D
You end up taking the long way home......
You just get addicted to how easily the engine revs to the redline and that metallic, raspy noise at higher revs. I spent most of the day driving around and i'll do the same tomorrow, (once i've washed it again). [banana

I'm looking towards BMW Titanium 2 trims. Anybody has a set on their E46 coupe and fancy a swap with my M3 Titanium Shadow?

Hi,
Nice car. Just wanted to know how much the AC Schnitzer Racing Strut Brace was? I just bought an M3 and the previous owner had this installed.

what was the 8000k tingy? is it the bulbs for the headlight?
what about the philips 6000k bulbs you had before.
so you're putting the ccfl instead of the wp halos.

8000k xenon bulbs. 6000K Philips up for sale, cheap cheap ;)

so the 8000k matches better with the fogs 7500k bulbs then your philips 6000k.

believe me have tried a hellva lot to get rid of this crappy Junior member thingie...
Basically 300 posts and then you get upgraded. Durgesh lowered it down to 30..so I got there..but then when he put it back up to 300 and it put me back as junior member..so keep posting!!

Welcome to the Motorsport world!!! :D
I notice your shortlist did not have the M5 listed.... guess you gotta work up to it!
Its a lot more fun once you're used to the extra power to turn the SPORT mode ON and the DSC off - thats when the fun begins....
And when you are really up to it - you can disable th DSC completely!!! I mean when you switch it off - it just disables the Skid control portion - there is another mode (details of disabling/enabling available) whereby you can turned the whol lot off and treat it like a rag doll!!! Thats fun... but requires proper getting used to the car and driving experience (no disrespect of course).
For the time being enjoy the beast... and if you want more power, and parental respect, theres the M5 ! (my son is mature now, he has a 4-door saloon - he is doing well because it is not a toyota! [hmm )
