I personally hate the 1 series..Just something about the look of it...
like a small estate or something...That said im sure with a set of 19"s
lowered and a bumper/skirt kit on, it cud/wud look well...
Jeremy Clarkson give it a good review on TopGear, the 3.0 model against
the VW Golf R32 but cudnt justify the £31,000 price tag for the M-Tech
model and the only differance was a few M-Tech badges stuck everywhere
compared to the basic model...The 1 series won on the fun factor being rwd
but the golf won overall unfortunatally.I'm not a fan of Golfs either..

I also own a 1 series. It was brought to replace our other E46 (my wifes) and was more of a lifestyle decision but I am so glad we have it. The driving experiance is superb, a brilliant chassis with taut handling and one of the best (if not THE best) driving positions of any BMW I have owned. The looks are subjective but i like it, there is no mistaking it is a BMW thats for sure - it has all the common BMW signatures. The 3 door looks wonderful and with a 3.0 should be a belter. We hope to buy another in 18 months or so and that other will be a 130i [cool .

My parents have a 118d sport. I don't know what possessed them to purchase the thing over a 320d other than for some weird reason my mother said the 1 was easier to drive and had a better interior [hmm .

Looks are subjective for some reason i think the one looks better in the rain or cloudy days but the sun brings out the metallic paint.

I have driven the thing many times and it is a very very impressive drive, communicative steering feel like the early E30 318is and E36 318is, lovely slick six speed gearbox and nice clutch(by BMW standards) and decent power and acceleration from the 122 bhp diesel.

Also its pretty well balanced with the roll telling you how much grip is left and when the limit is exceeded it hops around at the rear and the front starts to understeer(really only when joyriding)

Also as mystic said the seating position is very close to the M3's.

Its such a fulfilling drive especailly when you expect F all from it.

The plus points of the 1 series are : -

- start/stop button and the keyfob ( nice touch )
- the nice sized steering wheel with buttons
- the interior cubby holes (ie the one on the right of the steering wheel for the phone and the I pod dock under the armrest
- the amount of bloody map reading lights.
- the drive of the thing, so chuckable even when DTC is off.
-Ride really is smooth like a 5.
-5 star safty for someone like my mum its important
- driving position is spot on like the M powered cars.
- Big boy toys like rain sensors, climate control, PDC, DTC,

Now the negatives of the thing :-

-Cost , my parents was a bit over 20k  WTF !
- the centre tunnel is always hitting my left leg when resting (maybe i'm too big)
- the rear legroom when a big person like me is sitting in it (honestly its like the 6 series in the back)
- the materials used , it feels okay if you have a 3 even maybe a 5 series, but when i jumped from driving my fathers 745i to this it felt quite horrendous and cheap. the plastics were Honda like and the buttons did not have that BMW qaulity to them even though most of them are the same. Even my dad agrees the 1 does feel cheap compared to his seven.
- sound sytem is terrable its like the bloody E36 and thats over 10 years old.
- rear visabilty (okay you get PDC but still you need your rear view)
- stupid start/stopping procedure when your in a rush, it'll feel like forever to figure out what to do. [bang
- the bloody outside door handles always stick when entering quickly.
-Economy itas alright maybe for my mum she gets (45mpg+) but when i took it for a country lane thrash i got the MPG to read 14.4 mpg [bang ! ! ! ! ! ! ! and it only redlines at 4.5k !!!
- BMW even cut costs with the service manual and log book they give you. Its like something you recive with a bloomin' PS2. Mystic will agree with me there.

all in all, a alright car, new but i feel as a used small car it would be great(cost would be cheap).

A 3dr would be a sick drivers car, the added stiffness would make it excellent through the turns but knowing BMW they will charge more for 2 doors less, which really is a bit sickening.

Raj.

The 118's performance is no where near the 120 or 130. Theres a big difference in everything from a 118 to a proper little maean 120. The interior is nothing to the normal standard of BMW interior, but the handling is awesome, and lets face it, all it needs is a little love to help it on its way... :D

Raj, my wifes has the pro stereo not the business and it is a massive improvement, one of the best sounding standard BMW units I have heard for a while. Are you sure your mums is a sport as it looks identical to our SE. Asa new buy I agree they don't represent good value for money but we brought ours at 8 months old and with a few options its new price was around £21.5k but we got it for £500 over the glasses trade in of a perfect model so got a cracking deal. I am sure if everyone drove one they could understand the appeal. We needed one to cart the dog around in the boot and wanted to keep with BMW for the RWD and general driving manners so it is perfect. The interior is not an awful different to the E90 but does feel more driver orientated which IMHO is a good thing. I was going to get a tuning box but can't be arsed, we will wait for the 130i - still goes sideways reasonably well though  .

You know Mystic i thought it was a SE aswell but my father and mother told me its a sport !!

Should have known the old folks aren't good with details.

that is true Mystic if everyone drove one they would be pleasantly suprised.

just wondering is it only you and the wife in your family as that what my mum and dad have the car for. They only use the front two seats the rear two are there just incase they need to take someone with them. As its only my mum and dad who live in the other home.

Thus the 3 door would be a very good proposion for them .

So you definatly getting rid of it ? my parents are going to get rid of theirs next year but probably for another 1 or the new mini.

amazing that many 1 series owners really only need 2 doors.

anyways mate goodluck with the 130i , that thing is rapid to fooook. plus the M pack looks so much better than the sport varients. I also forgot to say this is the first Diesel ever in our family and i was impressed by the smoothness and refinement of the engine.

Raj, the 118d will stay with us for the next 18 months until the 130i is affordable. We have two kids a 4 year old and 1 year old hence we aren't too worried about rear legroom and access but i can't see it as being a practical car for a family of four where the kids are in their teens, plus, there isn't really enough boot space for a family of four as a main car. Here is ours

sarah - i can remember reading in that PBMW article that you were after a 130i and you'd stick a supercharger on it.... now that's be sick as, but i still stand by my initial comment and state again that i think it's f-ugly!

could you really justify shelling out in the region of £31k for a bloody 130i ?!?

£30k would have me one hell of an M3 sitting on sweet rims, and will be 10 times the car of a 130i, and will still look as good as it does now.

Golden rule with cars with poorer residuals, never buy new ;) In 18 months, the 130i would have depreciated to an eye watering level and become the performance bargain with a bit of flare ;)

Wot Big Pimp said......
£31k... The list of cars you cud buy with that .......
then you wanna add ur rims , charger and kit after that = £10k (ish)
SO then , in the region of £40k to spend
Show me the way to the Porker Garage

You go for it SJ, the 1 series is a cracker no doubts. The looks of a lot of the new BMs is a little hit and miss for most, but I like the fact that BM styling has taken it on a step rather than just sticking to more of the same.

As Nick has said, the 130i is gonna be a bargain hot hatch given a little time, so hold on and get a true performance ride.

As for 3 doors, well that is just lush

Exactly why we are waiting 18 months. Our car lost a bucket load of its initial value in the first 8 months. We can't lose too much financially on this one now :D . I can guarantee that a 1er driven by the right person will embarass a load of very very expensive machinery - hell, in my 118d I can keep up with anything on country lanes I know well ;)

Since I saw the 1 series I thought this car should come out in 2 doors first as it will look better, I think the high price comes from it being a new model I think the MKII will be either cheaper in price or it will be the same but with better options ,

Nick it will be awesome especially if it has the optional leather sports seats there so much better through corners than the standard items. The "active steering" is a bit to light at high speeds, but other than that the 130 m sport will rock ! !

P.S don't forget to scare the salesman/woman by switching of the DTC and taking the revs past 6500 rpm ! ! [cool

Its no M3 but it is brilliant ! :D

Sarah i'd go for the 130 used though, You will be truely different from everyone having a modded M3 or a 3 series . [cool

It'll be costly to mod the thing though, theres no space under the bonnet !

Test drove a 130i Sport today .....

http://www.bmw.co.uk/AUC/vehicle_images/resized2/LV54MUA_01_CVI_301205_20.jpg

.....it's pretty quick and nippy for what it is, engine feels exactly the same as the M54 from the E46 despite having 27 more BHP. But after M ownership, 258BHP is simply not enough, and any chassis other than one that comes from Motorsport is nothing but numb :(

So there you go, if you like driving and once you've allowed yourself to taste the prowess of M cars, you choice of future BMWs will inevitably be cut by more than 70%. Be warned.
