As most of you know, I dabbled with remapping for 6 months with ECU-RS. It soon became obvious that my file writing guys were not able to extract decent gains from some of the more popular petrol engines, and I was having to turn down more work than I could take on. Not a great business model! I've since returned to property maintenance, and the only diesel I now run is a Transit (instead of my E61 530d) and fun car is the 330ci.
I had my oil service and annual inspection carried out by Jason at BW Chiptune yesterday, and we got talking (as us car geeks do) about remapping and fuel consumption. We talked about the (I thought) negligible gains for remapping this engine, but Jason told me that a couple of years ago he purchased a 330i solely for the purpose of working it on it to write a decent custom map, as most other tuners have failed to do this. From that, he had written a successful map that he thought I would enjoy, which would improve MPG, smooth out the torque curve and free up some more power. (He said I could have had one that was more aggressive, but that would have given me a few MPG less, so I declined to have that one)
He also said to me that any 330 petrols he has remapped in the past, he can update their maps to his latest version to improve power & fuel consumption, or for the full hardcore aggressive power map.
I live around 50 miles away, with the journey home being a big chunk of M25, plus some A and B roads, so a great mix for testing the remap.
The car feels much smoother the torque is more present in lower gears, allowing for ease in pulling away, and less gear changing in traffic. On the A roads / motorway you can really appreciate the extra grunt. I have never noticed such a gain on a remapped NA petrol car - big grin factor! And lane changing in 5th is effortless - the car just keeps on pulling - it is me that backs of for fear of my licence, rather than the car running out of oomph.
Overall? God I wish I had done this back in June when I first bought the car! But the new owner will certainly be very happy, as it the car now is as quick as it looks
