one of my big pet hates is a..holes driving right up close behind me , tailgating as it were .

So far i have had these solutions :

1. the old faithful stamping on brake pedal hard but momentarily manoever
2. If on a motorway or dual carriagway with center reservation , drive right over to the right so tyre is off the edge of the tarmac , this shoots the grit and pebbles backwards at almost same speed you are travelling forwards , at the very least will make a metalic sound as hits their bonnet , at worst ( over say 100mph ) will probably crack windscreens, stone chips to front of car almost a certainty
3. Do what I did to my M3 and fit HID into the reverse lamps with a seperate switch that bypasses reverse switch when needed . this has by far been the most effective , no one expects 205,000 candela in their gob from rear of a car !! [cool However this is also the most dangerous , as to date i have made 3 cars careen off the road behind me , so i disconnected it .

However , I think we have a good compromise now in form of a numberplate holder with a built in flash module , just press the button and it flashes momentarily at the driver behind you . What do you think ?

If I market this , the cost will be around £200 . There is some evidence to suggest that IN SOME circumstances this device will also prevent a flash speedcamera getting your number plate or at least all the numbers , as it is also wired to a slave flash sensor . This anti camera use was the original design intention , but I woulkd not marlet these on that basis alone as not high scoring enough . ;) ;) :D

Unfortunatly people do worry about what's behind them, especially when they're two young children are in the back seat and an 18 wheeler is about 6 inches from your rear bumper with a driver thats probably exhausted as he's been driving for 80 hours that week....

Of course, i'm sure your not one of those but it's wrong to say don't worry about whats behind you...

I think you may have real legal problems with marketing these.... My friend has the blue "police" lights behind his grill.... Lol Now if you pull over asnd let them pass, then put them on, that really is funny, but again, very illegal... Lol

I personally think just chill out and let them pass, then maybe they won't kill me....!

hi guys , some answers:

no I should not think it is legal ...but well worth the risk anyway . I fitted a hidden kill switch on this when testing , so if i did get pulled they would not be able to prove it worked ...simple .

it is a single flash , a strobe would indeed be dangerous

Steve I too have to disagree with you , having someone tailgating is dangerous ( if I suddenly have to brake due to a real emergency for example , then i get rear ended too ) and can distract the driver , especially at night when car behind has mis aligned headlamps . i cant believe anyone does not mind tailgaters ...... [hmm

out of interest , can any of you computer gurus out there see if you can use image software to see if you can extract any of the hidden registration letters , see if its original intended use works ?

thanks

Had a quick go with Photoshop but i don't think i can get anything from that image, the white is too burnt out... may be different if it was taken from a distance though.....

no I should not think it is legal
That is the whole point of such a device. I wouldn't use it to ward off people tailgating me (TBH I am not bothered by them), but I wouldn't hesistate putting it to test on pesky speed cameras and mobile traps, congestion charges etc :D :D

I have experienced it 1st hand as i also have a HGV licence (although i no longer drive them). While i can sympathise with you it's still no reason to do the same?

IMO tailgating in a 45 ton truck is far, far more dangerous than the likes of speeding and should never be condoned no matter what /quote you have to put up with /quote

If the reason for the plate is for cameras, pm me, i have been playing with a different idea on those lines for a while now, and it could be a little bit more realistic ofr those pesky cameras... Lol. And it isn't illegal as far as i have found so far....

Steve

Take your point, if you drive for a living there must be many wind-ups, purely on the basis that you spend so much time on the road.

My pet hate is people who use only the middle lane on the motorway for mile after mile and travel at 69 mph  weekends are the worse, with drivers who only use the motorway once or twice a year, or so it would appear by their poor driving.

My sisters old boss used to make these and market them as 'Flashback', did this a few years ago, even made a story in the papers LOL. Daftest thing he did was try and say to the papers/police that he was using it to protect his art from people who were taking photos and then copying them and making fakes [crackmeup [crackmeup [crackmeup

Tis a good idea mind Roy! [cool

hey KV , you know Bill ? damn ...small world

We were one of the first companies to market Backflash , about 6 - 7 years ago , I even remember a couple TV news articles etc . yes we were selling it as anti paparazzi device aimed at celebs :p
If I remember correctly Bill approached david Beckham to ask him to promote the device on hid Porsche , I think ..../ ring any bells ? He wanted nothing to do with it

Anyway , yes , as i have said this device is intended originally to defeat speed cameras , I am going to put up another post inviting members to try and photoshop the number plate digits from that photo , if no one can then make we start selling them as a dual purpose device .

And Steve , i do see your point too actually , made worse by car drivers in general treating lorry drivers like second class citizens on the road ......

In an amirican Magfazine they sell these spray stuff which makes your plate become white when a camra flashes on it, as for tailgaters My solution is go faster than him ,full throtle ahead :D

It'd be a lot safer, and probably more marketable to have an LED screen flashing 'TAILGATER!', 'BACK OFF' or 'TOO CLOSE'
