Following on from a suggestion in a recent thread , myself and Invisible kid 69 have been discussing the possibility of investing in development of a Shark Injector / Blue Fin type of DIY ECU remap tool for UK and euro BMW ( and perhaps other ) models .

Apologies if I am stating the obvious , but in case some of you dont already know , we are talking about a little box that you buy mail order outright , plug it into your DME or OBD port , press a button , wait a while , and hey presto ...one fully remapped car ! No need for rolling road or travel to company premises. I think there may well be a lucrative market for this ...

I am sure we can get the licence to the actual maps , and that we can get the actual hardware designed ,prototyped and tested with help from members . My initial idea is to offer two map options per car model , one for totally standard cars and one for common combination of mods on mildly tuned versions (i.e. intakes , dekat , exhaust ) where applicable . I already know a company that holds such alternative map data , although have not approached them or anyone else on this yet , Evotechnik is geting an exclusive , if you will [jam :D

Me and Invisible would be very grateful if members would give a bit of consideration and opinions to these points :

1. do you think this is a good idea ? would you buy it if it had been proved safe and effective ?
2. i think we should offer two shots at remapping per unit we sell , to allow for user errors or customer losing map during main dealer service within , say , 9 months of first installation of new map . After this time the second map on the unit would delete itself and customer would need to pay for new upload to his handset .
3. handset can be reprogrammed for other cars , at a fee , if customer buys different car .
4. these units would be configured such that they could only be used on the one ECU and no other , so customer cannot remap his mate's car for instance .
5.Now the crunch ; I reckon we are looking at 20 -30 k to get it off the ground , anyone else got any different estimates ?
6. continuing with the crunch  any of out there interested in discussing possible hard cash investment in this venture , on a formal and equal share and equal say basis , written up so as to safeguard all our interests equally ? IMO, if going ahead we should register a new (and seperate to CA )limited company for this purpose , with all investors as directors and / or share holders .
7. Any of you who may have skills /contacts/experience that would be of use in developing this project are welcome to join in , your skills in lieu of hard cash investment

thanks in advance

Roy,
Might know someone who has the electronic skills needed for this, will get in contact with him and see if he or someone he knows might be able to help.

Cheers

Sounds like an opportunity. It really depends on the tuner scene closer the time. It might be worth getting a feeler for those who would consider a purchase, etc.

Considering cars cost generally more here, there should need to be some guarantee offered:
ensure the dealer warranty remains intact
offer your own warranty
state the risks are on the head of the user/driver/owner of the vehicle

Just my 2 pence worth,
Vik

AmD offer a one-click system for re-mapping VW's, etc. They went through quite a lot of work to get them to work as they wanted. Don't know Roy, but as one company to another they may be willing to offer some sort of advice on how they went about it.
