Those quotes you're getting are way too much if you're the third driver on the policy, and thats even if you're living in the bronx.
Im 19 and going to be looking for around the same kind of insurance as yourself, but when i was 18 i was insured on a 95 318 convertible as a named driver on my dads policy with Norwich Union and the premium was less than £1000.
Try Norwich Union, elephant.co.uk and confused.com
Hope this helps.

Norwich Union insured my first car (with it in my dads name) for £680 I think, but that could be wrong. They won't quote now 'cos of my accident but CIS are offering about £850 (again in my dads name and a 316) and according to the scrappy where my car went afterwards, CIS are the best for claiming (most efficient).
Also, CIS do this thing where you have to name any over 21 drivers but then anyone under 21 can drive it - yes, anyone. A friend has that insurance and have no complaints, I'll be switching to CIS when renewal comes round, cheapest we could find when you factor in my claim. By the way, that CIS quote is with me named and my claim declared.
Hope that helps. :)

yea phone around... try royal sunalliance. You shouldnt be looking to pay more than £1300/£1400 to add you to the policy. (Thats how much mine is on the 316i @ 17  Dads on 5 years no claims last time i checked.)

Try asda...
They have literally just started doing insurance. I supplied cars for the advert...!
The down side, is they won;t touch any engine mods but the rest of the car is cool...
The plus side, they want the business, so will undercut people like tesco's... And seeing as they are a BIG company anyway, i can't see them stiffing people. They won't want bad publicity...
Failing that, i LOVE direct line, they just can't do enough to help in the event of a claim...

Give Direct Line a try mate.
I'm 20, with 1 years no claims, on my own policy, with a BMW 523i SE, paying £2100 fully comp.
Not bad considering I live in Stoke-on-Trent

www.insuresupermarket.com is a useful website.
When I was 20 I paid £640FC for my VW Bora 2.8 V6 with Egg insurance. Im now with Directline for my 330ci and at 23 (5yrs NCB) Im paying £540FC. I was with Adrian Flux for a while on the last car and the paperwork was ridiculous, very low tech and poor customer service. Your own policy is the only way to go, named driver when you are the main driver isn't only illegal, but just puts off the inevitable when you need to get your own.
