larst time i changed cars some 4 years back i brought a car then sold the one i had so the insurance just go swoped over , this time i need to sell my car to help fund the new one, which means i wont have a car nor any insurance, this is going to be a problem when turning up at some ones house to test drive a car.

i have spoken to my insurance company and asked how i go about insuring for this and there suggestion was to get the owner to put me on there policy, yeah great idea  .

Does any one have any other ides better than this one .

to add (as ive just remembered) im on my miss car insurance as a named driver would this also entitle me to drive anther car third party if she is .

cheers .

Is your insurance going to run out? and your not going to renew as your selling the car? Or are you going to sell the car, then cancel the Insurance?

If the Latar...

Just dont cancel insureance? That way you would still be covered to drive any car third party?

Not sure if you are a named driver. Check with the insurance company.

I know that when fully comp, that gives you TPFT on any other car.

What are you in the market for?

im going to stop the insurance.

im not sure that works, what if you sell the car then crash the car your testing, the fact you no longer own the car that is insured and it is no longer registered to you (as is stated when insuring ) will invalidate it .

just to add , i wish i hadn't put my bloody phone number on the web site (confused.com) when getting quotes, ive had 7 calls in the larst hour..... .

try dayinsure.com:

http://www.dayinsure.com/test-drive-insurance.aspx

I had a quote of £22 for 1 day insurance when looking to test drive a 330ci.

I suppose it will depend on the vehicle you want to test drive though.

Just a another thing... if you can line up a few test drives in that one day then it makes it a bit more economical financially.

cheers, but do you not have to supply the reg number, meaning multiple test drives in one day wont be visible.

Their online system might not be very accomodating with multiple plate numbers/test drives, but you could ring them to sort that out.

It would be daft to have to book a fresh day of insurance for each drive.

Correct! Be careful of that. Same thing happened to Raj, he sold the car but hadn't cancelled the insurance so thought he was still insured TP on another car, but obviously as soon as your not registered keeper anymore your insurance is invalid!

new idea, i could swap the insurance on to a friends car (that i wont be driving ) tell the insurance company im being lent the car and it is registered in my friends name, i will then be insured third party to drive other cars .

Its no longer automatic coverage for 3rd party if you are fully comp anyway. It has to be specified when taking out your policy.Sye just use the day insure thing,or if its through a dealer/garage you will be on theirs anyway

But will the guy let you test drive the car with only TPFT?? I definately wouldnt!

To be honest he wouldnt be much worse off letting you drive it completely uninsured, as if it was driven off a cliff the result would be the same, no insurance payout.

I lost out with this, I used Bell & paid extra to cover me TP on other vehicles which me & my mate worked on. Took that cover when I was 23. Renewal comes up & they no longer cover under 25's for TP. So I had to wait 6 months to drive other cars. Then I had to phone them to ask them to add the third party cover which is free to over 25's if you ask for it but they charge you an admin fee!

with my insurance i do have third party on other cars, tbh im not thinking about the seller, im more interested in me being covered legally on the road.

it seams the way forward would be to look at a few and get the owners of the cars to take test drives with me as passenger then when i find one i like to get a day cover then bargain this into the price of the car.

Every car I've sold privately with the exception of the Caddy, the buyer hasn't test driven it - just been a passenger!

Yea I think that's what I would do. I guess you can generally tell if the car runs ok though, even as a passenger. Just ask him to drive straight with hands off the wheel to make sure it doesnt pull to the side, or something like that perhaps!
