View Full Version : Most expensive mod you’ve regretted

I’m sure this must have been discussed before, but I’m curious to see what others have spent a large amount of time and cash on only to later regret having done.
My most expensive regret was the Eisenmann exhaust for my 330i. Eisenmann is a quality piece of kit and sounded great, but it was too much for a daily driver. I commute approx. 50 miles a day (mixed roads) and it was just too loud – Would have been fine if my 330i was a Sunday drive only. I had the mid ‘sport’ level sound but it would just give me a headache, even my passengers used to complain after a short while. It sounded fabulous if you were external to the car.
I soon went back to stock, cost about £800 all in for purchase, fit and then removal.
I’d never put a modded exhaust on again without having test driven beforehand.

I wouldn't say as much as a mod but purchase.....purchased a VW Touareg. What a load of Kack.
Never regretted any of my mods. Always do plenty of research and never buy a mod I am not 100% sure about. Exhausts are a hard mod to get right though as the same exhaust can sound slightly different on 2 similar cars.

What was wrong with it?

Bought a 2.5tdi....in 2003. The plan was to get an ABT kit fitted to it as visually the car looked stunning. But just like your car, there's always one bad apple in the bunch. It was riddled with electrical faults, the transmission failed and a niggly leak developed. This all in within 1 year of ownership.......

the only thing i regret is spending 10k on a £500 car then selling it for peanuts.

It depends how many peanuts you sell it for :D
I haven't had a mod I didn't like, but I still do have a carbon fibre E46 coupe boot that is sprayed in silver grey that I never got round to fitting... bah. anyone can have it for £100 if they want.

They all had transmission problems. Transfer boxes we're a common replacent. Inchcape had 2 dedicated technicians working on just Touregs & Phaetons!

none yet, except maybe the exhaust for the Sportster which visually doesn't quite fit with the car properly. It's something I'm mulling over at the moment.

I bought a set of new BBS Lms and a set of VRS 6 pot brembos whilst i was at it!!! Few months earlier i had bought a AA exhaust to. Very damaging to the wallet.
Those were the days......... But never regretted it, as I had thought very carefully about what i wanted.

Eibach springs were a waste if money. But a cheap mod.
My worst mistake was buying the 330ci. Lost £4500 in 1 year. Should of just bought the m3 from the start.

Theres quite a number of your cars that I thought "why the fuck did he sell that, for THAT". But never is that statement truer than turning Alfie's 318 into a renault 5 dude.
Insane decision.

Well my biggest regret is spending nearly 5k on audio and it all getting knicked. I dont think I will ever go down the car audio route ever again.
Ouchhhhhhhhhhhh thats awful ben.
Fortunately touch wood never had anything stolen. My biggest regret if you can call it one though, is getting the 320 and not a 330d ;) As the insurance difference was only £400/year.
But don't get me wrong I still love the 320 especially since the remap.
Meh. 20 months to go till I'm 25 :o

It was partly my fault but still made me really mad. All I think of is all the things I could have bought for the house. We are all getting old Dave cant believe im nearly 30 lol.
Aye. I was 17 when I first heard about this forum. Older but only very slightly wiser. Funy how things go :p
you've got a point re houses though. I I figure to have spent about 8k modding the pug and about 5 on the bm so far... Then we are only another 5k or so away from a deposit on a flat around this way. But it's all been spent on the cars. I might regret it slightly but I'd still probably do it again! That said. Spending and regretting it is still a better position to be in than spending and having it nicked!!! Gutting...

I now say that to my self. But hey things happen. The true thing behind selling the 316 was to buy a subaru because it was SOOO SLOW. I truely thought about M3 engine but 5k project no no

Never regretted a Modification as such, as most mods are a learning curve (well most).
For the RS I purchased a brand new Milltek Cat back with Valves £1800 and a GruppeM air filter (second hand £500). had them on the car for around 6 months then sold them (£1100), put std back on...as I was going to sell the car, now I decided to keep her for another 2 years (due to bottom falling out of high performance car market), im gutted that I sold them on! im trying to buy the GruppeM back of the guy I sold t for (them babies retail new for £850). Oh well, will we ever learn lol
...did I regret buying it....hard to say.

I hear ya....lost loads on mine too. Just boring now and feels like its getting slower by the day.
Audio system for me though, sounds great but i dont watch videos in the car. i went for the double din conversion so i could have the alpine head unit and watch video off the ipod what a waste. Simple next time i think.

[QUOTE=jk330ci]I hear ya....lost loads on mine too. Just boring now and feels like its getting slower by the day.
Then fit a charger.....opps thats another 3 grand down the drain and its still not as fast as a M!!!! Must admit often thought what would I be in if I didn't spend that 10 grand on my 330ci. Especially as mines now got moon miles as I drive it everywhere. But as most of us know moddin' never quite goes like that...usual starts with the smallest of things (halos) and just grows and grows. I looked at the M3 4 years ago when I bought mine and they were starting at over 20 grand then. That was twice the amount I paid for my 330. Plus the insurance was double the amount too....
The funny thing is (if I did buy that M3) I would now have a modded' M3 with 150k on the clock, 10 grand spent, moaning about why I didn't wait and buy a CSL. Theres guys on here who bought Porsches wishing they'd waited and bought a lambo Gally or R8...Its all relative....

In all the years I have been into modding the only thing I ever regretted buying is when those 3 spoke alloys came out :( I went straight to the old original Ripspeed up in north london and thought yeah that would make cleaning alloys easier. Well that novelty soon went as they looked absolutley shite!

I remember my brother craving for them back in the mid 90 's.... Its a good job he couldnt find any...
He once went and bought a mk2 gti 16v just because it had 16" momo arrows.. which we're like rocking horse shit at the time.. I think he regretted that....
Wonder what happened to all them 3 spoke alloys.... as u never see them anymore..
