Picked up the 540 today - hard to believe it hadn't been dumped by the state of it

It's a 2002 and has only done 50k

Dad had it from new and only put 12k on it, elder brother has had it for the last 4 years and added the rest of the miles and all of the damage

Has all these toys (http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/vindecode) and only cost me £5k, with the major service carried out on Monday, 6 months tax and fresh MOT :)

Quite impressed to find a dent or a scratch on virtually every panel or bit of trim.

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-4.jpg

Gently kerbed rims and a flappy bit of plastic under the front bumper - hoping that will be easy to replace when I change to the M5 mesh

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-2.jpg

Is that a couple of leaves in the boot interior?

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-7.jpg\

Ah yes, thought so

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-6.jpg

Apparently there is an AC Schnitzer exhaust under this layer of grime

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-8.jpg

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-13.jpg

Both mirror covers cracked too!

http://www.peppermintproperties.co.uk/images/e39day1-5.jpg

I'm fairly confident my brother had not had the interior cleaned for at least two years, when it was last serviced by a main dealer

Any ideas what this is? Wired into the blower duct by the windscreen, but hanging out

Pleased to say that it had a deep clean (which sadly revealed even more scratches) this afternoon, and have since fitted chrome rear indicators, xenon look reversing bulbs, SSDD angel eye LED modules, Intravee, KCA 420i and iPod.

Which has also clarified what a crap sound system the E39 has compared to the 10 speaker setup in the X5.

So next mods are refurbing wheels, getting scrapes sorted (boring) and more excitingly getting the audio sorted

What's it like to drive? - awesome.

Do I need to lower it? - don't think I do - handling is fantastic, and there isn't much of a gap between rims and arch.

Picking up M5 mirrors and new kidney grilles at the weekend. CAI is on order.

Next mods will be tints, quad exhaust, ACS 3 piece rear spoiler and plenty more I'm sure

Some people do not deserve nice cars. I see this every day at work people trading in cars that have have never been cleaned or looked after. And I have to clean them lol. If I was you Dan I would spend some money on it being detailed.

TBH the Polish guys did a fantastic job cleaning the interior and the exterior - took six of them 90 mins and only cost me £40 :)

Once the dents and scrapes are sorted I'll get the paint corrected, and maybe the G Tec nano coating I had on the E55

Beyond the scratches and tiny dents and of course the dirt is a very nice base car. With your track record in modding I think this will come out awsome. Is Brian helping you sort it out too?

Nice, once all cleaned up, it will be a great looking ride.

Shame it was in such a poor condition prior to purchase. Some people dont appreciate their purchases. :(

TBH the same spec, same mileage cars are around £7 -9k, so I did allow for refurbishment in my purchase price.

Going to get a quote from mobile paint guys, and also from local bodyshop for a cash job.

As above, nice base model mate and by the time you've finished playing with it im sure it will be individual!

Those flappy plastic bits under the bumper are ridiculously expensive. Mine were damaged by the previos owner and wanted to change them but at the price they were quoteing was too much for the time being. :(

getting a crapped up car and making it look nicer is more fun than buying a perfect car imo, good luck with the restoration .

Scorcher looking good man well under that grime i'm sure lol.

I'd advise looking at the Nanolex Coating Rob at Gleamingkleen does it down Englandshire i do it up here it is awesome looking and the beading and dirt repellant properties its frankly gob smacking.

Nice find Dan

The E39 540 is a great car. I drove Andy's 2002 540 for several weeks when the 335 went in for the sound system build, and if I had to buy an everyday cruiser, the E39 540 is on the top of my list.

I would recommend you fit a sprint booster. It will most definitely liven up the car. Great engine with good enough torque, but it's a tad lazy when compared to the throttle response of machines today.

Enjoy the project. Would definitely like to see the car after some TLC. I'm sure it will be a gem.

I'd seriously stay clear of these guys Dan if you want a proper finish that will last more than a few washes. Nothing compares to a body shop...

I do appear to have a scratch on virtually every panel :(

Will see what the bodyshop says
