View Full Version : My poor car :(

It got wedged today between a wall and a bin thanks to the combined uselessness of my parents .

Dad took the car out last night to a meeting and thinking he was clever parked it in the driveway in gear without the handbrake up INSTEAD of just putting it in neutral and putting the handbrake up. Even after ive told him 100's of times not to.

Morning came and i told my mum id drive so instead of just waiting for me she proceeds to put the window down go around to the other side and start the car WITHOUT checking if its in gear from the outside. Again ive told her a million times to check the gear is neutral ESPECIALLY since dad has a habit of not putting it in neutral.

Yup you guessed it. Car jerked forward about 5 metres because of the combination of my driveway slope AND the no handbrake and being in gear. Now this wouldnt have been much of a problem espcially since noone was infront of it! Had it not been for the stupid bin.

Our shared driveway goes between two houses (ours and the neighbours). The car was facing into the drive and due to a wheelie bin being in the gap between the two houses (right up against the neighbours side) it forced the car to go left and hit the wall with the front passenger side corner meanwhile the wheelie bin lodged itself against the rear driver side door.

I have to admit it was funny site for a split second before i realised what had happened. (This all took place with me still getting ready inside the house). I eventually dislodged the bin after drop kicking it about 6 times which let me remove the car and vent some of the anger.

Heres the damage. Less than i thought it would be but still sucks :( :( :( :(

^ main dent on rear door but front door has light dent aswell :(

Not going to declare on insurance because premium will go waaaaaaay up. Looking to get it sorted privately.

Anyone got any advice on repair/removal of paint? (The white came off a wheelie bin.... the wheelie bin was green but has white numbering. The green on passenger side came from a pipe.)

Holy shit!!!! At the same time, I'm laughing :D What a comedy of errors.

Right, onto business.

That rim can be sorted by any wheel refurb company, so I wouldn't be too worried about it. The bodywork is another matter. Those dents look pretty bad and would either need new skins or pushed out professionally. It's definitely not a job for chips away or something like that.

I have a bodyshop in Slough that can sort it out to a flawless finish and they're pretty reasonable too, cash-in-hand job kinda thing.

I won't use my regular bodyshop as they only do me a favour on bits and bobs like spoilers, mirrors, splitters etc, something like that would need to be bought in officially and they're not the cheapest by a LONG way.

If you can spare a few minutes on the weekend and don't mind travelling to Slough, I can take you to my mate's place to get a quote. I am not even going to guess how much it's going to cost, but as an example, my dad had a front wing repaired, front and rear bumpers repaired and repainted and adjacent panels blended in for £300 and their work was flawless

lol i definately see the funny side of it. One of those one in a million chance things. Still sucks everytime i look at the car though. People keep giving me the 'thats what you get when u learn on a beemer' looks as if i crashed it lol.

I popped down to bmw and a new front wing will cost around £155. I was told bumper will need replacing. Thats pretty pricey so was thinking maybe going with an upgraded one ie mtech or summin. Would that look offkey with a stock rear and sides? Otherwise this guy near me said he had a second hand one which hed sell me.

As for the body shop suggestion thanks for the advice. My dads in germany at the moment i went to see one of his mates at a garage and he reckons he can sort it out. Im a bit worried but dad seems to trust him so if it doesnt work out ill pop up their.

Also the side mirrors going to need repainting. Dont know how much that costs. Might just get the upgraded ones.

Every cloud has a silver lining. If ANYTHING breaks on the car, time for an upgrade :)

Afif, keep an eye on ebay or findit.co.uk for Mtech sports kits. Places like autovogue will provide you with front, rear, sides, painted and fitted for £1k

1k!! You make it sound like small change. If you add that to the £155 for the wing. Then the labour for dent removal in the doors. Aswell as alloy refurbishment. And whatever happens to the side mirrors. Going to cost a small fortune :( Might have to give it a miss and stay stock then. I also need new projector indicators :( Only had them for like a week!

Damn that sucks! Looks like it'll be too big a job for chipsaway etc. You will need repainting of body panels. Good luck!

to be honest i thought i would have been me to claim the title first to crash/hit it!! Was my mum who did it tho. I hate when parents dont listen. I told them sooooooooooooooooooooo many times not to leave it in gear and double check it not in gear when they start. Guess they learnt the hard way. Both came back with 'were experienced drivers, worry about urself'.

55 quid isnt to far off what the alloy is worth so i might aswell order a new one if i cant find cheaper refurb. Thx tho.

guys i got quoted £800. This includes dent removal off the driver side. Second hand wing replacement. Second hand bumper replacement. Any painting that may be needed. Basically everything to get it back to how it was minus the indicator light and alloy refurb.

First thoughts are its a bit pricey. What ya reckon?

Hey Afif, sorry to hear about that, looks pretty scratched up.

On the plus side, the mental image of someone drop-kicking a wheelie bin when it's stuck between a car and a wall is quite amusing lol.

I hope it all works out for you mate.

Hi Afiff

I am really sorry to hear your bad luck. :( :( :(

I feel depressed as at the weekend I found that I have scuffed the bottom of the bumper on a speed bump. ( I never know that I did it untill I was cleaning the car) At lease you can not see the damage unless your head is about 2ft from the floor, so you must be fell 100000000000000 times worse than me. As BigFas says time to upgrade if you can and see it as an opportunity :)

So sorry to hear the bad news Afif :( I thought you was going to say you drop kicked your mum when i read your post

Sounds a little pricey to me aswell, considering thats 2nd hand parts!!

Wait and see what Fas's mate comes up with!!

Nasty one mate, my thoughts are with you and your bank manager. Anyway, can't you get the divvy parents to sort it for you. I'd be goin' feckin mental.

1st rule, dont let anyone else drive your car (Durg's), especially your bird and your folks. Nuff said.

Very sorry to hear that mate. There is nothing quite a sickening as the sound of a cars bodywork being scraped, crushed and dented. Horrible feeling. :(

I hope you get it sorted out soon. My dad also has a habit of leaving cars in gear...must be an old man thing! ;) Perhaps they didn't have hand-brakes in their day! :D

Good luck.

i dont really have a say in the matter these days. Mum waiting to get an automatic until then she gets to drive it. Otherwise id have to do all the school runs and college means i cant do that :(.

Let me think about this repair stuff.

so its £155 for the wing.
Lets say i got with the 1k body kit. thats £1155
Finally how much you reckon labour to install the wing is and remove the dents on the driver side doors?

I want to get a final alternative price for car to come out stronger after this :D. If it aint to much of a difference should be able to sort it out. Not much point in going back to stock and then starting over to upgrade the car.

I heard the sound of a bin falling over basically along with some sound of car metal but i assumed the bin must have just fallen over. 10 seconds later my sister runs upstairs and goes 'mums crashed the car'. Woke me RIGHT up lol.

Heres a pic of the crash scene. Notice the line of the wall behind the bin. Thats where its removed the stoned from the wall while i was expertly dislodging it

sorry to hear about that.
but with your dad putting it in gear without handbrake, it was an accident waiting to happen especially when there is a few people in the family driving the same car. :(
well, some excuse to upgrade.
mtec front will just do fine for now, you don't have to have the whole kit yet.
it will make a big different with just the mtec front. ;)

yea thats exactly what i told him! My exact words were. I wont foget but i KNOW mum will and will end up having to pay for a new front bumper. Only mum went one step further and took out hell of a lot more than just the bumper. Ive been reading the bmw catalogue and the mtech package is £672 not including painting. Think ill probably get the m tech off teddy and work the rest up slowly.
