The engline management light has come on on my E46.
I do not feel any difference driving the car, everything still the same.

I browsed a few threads on this topic at Evotechnik and looks like
the MAF/coil packs is a typical problem. However, I think this is a wise thing to do a diagnostic before changing anything. As BMW is just around the corner from where I live, I'll take my car to them for a computer diagnistics only. Anyone knows how much they charge for this?

I am just thinking...is it worth buying a OBD2 II CAN Bus Code Reader? Instead of paying BMW £80, I can buy the scanner for £60 and also reset the code.
If the problem is the MAF then I can change it myself.

If the reader can read all faults then for for it.

buy the tool use it then sell it would still be cheaper than asking dealer to do a one time scan for sure!

Already ordered. Its a cool tool - can see and reset all the error codes.

Thanks mate. The problem is that I only can make it either like 7am on a working day or on Saturday. So decided to order a universal scanner (can use it on almost any car!) which is useful to reset the error code.

Too late, but thanks for address. I may need to change any sensors on the engine or something. I still cannot believe BMW charges £160. It was £140 just recently

Update:

When I started testing my car and started that engine the Engine Management light has not come on. Still I decided to go ahead and test the car and the following error codes the recorded by the ECU:

1. P0313 Misfire detected with low fuel
2. P0160 O2 sensor curcuit no activity detected Bank 2 Sensor 2
3. P2272 O2 sensor signal stuck lean Bank 2 Sensor 2
4. P0171 System is too lean Bank 1

I decided to reset all the codes and none of them has come up yet.

Could have been a O2 sensor wiring or something and looks like i may need to change it in the future.
Misfire detected with low fuel could be due to a need to change spark plugs / coils
