View Full Version : Hot Film Air Mass Meter
Lot's of people have been having problems with their 116i 's and basically this guy has been having his car checked for a while and they realised it was the Hot-Film Air Mass Meter...
Now for those of you who know me, know i don't know jack about the technical side of things... anyone know what the hell this is?!
thanks!

Measures the air entering the engine to allow the ECU to control it and optimise performance - at a guess. I presume its like a MAF, could easily be (and probably am) completely wrong though.

you are correct Shuriken , it is what is commonly know as a MAF ;
HOT FILM or HOT WIRE refers to the actual method used to measure the airflow . If I remember my mechanical engineering correctly this type uses an electrically charged wire or conductive film to measure flow via changes in ionisation of the air molecules as it passes over the charged element .
This is more efficient and less restrictive to flow than the MAF's of old that would measure the amount of deflection on a hinged "flap" caused by the incoming air .
Makes you wonder how we managed for decades with "rule of thumb " carburretors ( ahh ...the good old days of primary jets , air correction jets, emulsifiers , accelerator pumps ,idle jets float pins.....)

your clever than you look boss :D only joking Roys right If you remove the MAF from the induction tube you see an electrical looking fuse wire that sits in the Air flow just after the filter

Musa it's a new brand new car.
Just give it to BMW and get them to sort it out.
