Im thinking of buying an E36 M3 evo with smg box.I|havnt driven one but have been told that they can be notchy and rough....is this true and whats your opinions-should i stick to a manual??

From all the negative things I have heard I would never consider one of the SMG1 M3's, the are generally very unreliable and this is reflected in the price. You will find that the manual variant holds its price alot better.
As a comparison, if you look at the E46 M3 - the SMG2 box is pretty much rock solid therefore these hold their value better than the manual version and are considered more desireable as a 2nd hand buy. (totally the opposite to the E36)
Having said all this, if you get one for a very cheap price, then go for it - cos then you can afford to fix any problems that might occur.
