The ECU changes the injector duty cycle to keep a nice A/F ratio. If the O2 sensor is broken the car will run rich, and use more fuel.

Do you get a reading next to the Fuel Trim Bank1 figure Kamm? The figure can be positive or negative, with 0.00 being optimal. Like Lee says, if the figure increases then the ECU rigs the car to run rich, if it decreases then it runs lean. Sounds like yours is the former Kamm.
RDG, your problem can be caused by the car running lean aswell, it detects an incorrect value and flags the warning light. Could also be an oxygen sensor on the cylinders though (think 6 cyls run one for cyls 1-3 and one for 4-6 iirc). The dealers should be able to plug-in and tell you almost immediately what's up. Worth running it for a few tankfuls though and see if it clears up, it could just be a temporary thing.
Digs had this a bit with his 330 I think, he'll probably be able to help better than me.
