My new DLS pure audiophile amplifier
Custom built variant of the DLS A-series Ultimate amplifier. 3 channels, 170W RMS X2 for components at 4ohms, 850W RMS X1 at 2ohms. The amp is 1 ohm stable
It stretches 820mm across and fits across the boot floor of the E46 perfectly.

Nice amps. I used to run DLS Ultimate amps a while ago in my old car. I had 2 x A6's, an A4 and an A3. Probably some of the best amps I've owned in the past :)
Paulm3, Genesis amps are hand built, but the DLS Ultimates aren't. There's a lot of controversy over Genesis and DLS, but I'll leave it at that :)
Nice amp Nick, I take it that it's an A3 and A6 in one case?

tunes are goni sound sweet with that very nice indeed
That looks excellent mate. That is a very exceptional piece of kit and is great to run your system with. I always think the best money you can spend on ICE is on a decent amp (and always just one is normally all thats needed). [bow [bow [bow

Yep it's based around the A3 and A6. Can't wait to hear them power my Focal components, should be crystal clear with a punch too [ok

Nick,
It will sound good.
DLS amps have a warm sound to them, which will "tame" your Focal speakers. Focals' do tend to sound a bit on the bright side, but that's not a problem with the DLS amps, in my opinion anyway. Good match [ok
What headunit are you running?
Cannondale99
21-07-2005, 02:24 AM
Infact, having another think about it, which Focals are you using?
I think getting hold of a DLS A2, and going active, will bring you great things.
A2 - tweeters
A3 part of the custom amp - mids.
A6 - sub/s
Will sound nicer than the Eisenmann :D

A2 for tweeters  ....which tweeters are you getting?
I have the Focal PolyGlass 165 V Slims. Wanted the PolyKevlar K2P but like most Focal speakers, they are way too deep for the doors unless I start cutting into them.
Headunit is the Pioneer AVIC X1R
I've just got hold of a Phoenix Gold EQ215iX equaliser, should bring out more from the components.
nice one nick..should be very nice... does anyone make any carbon fibre cased amps/subs etc??? that'll look sick! [jam
what cd are you gonna play first in the system? :D

Looks good, should sound ace. [cool How much does it weigh?
Shouldn't this thread be in the ICE section? ;)

Weighs approximately the same as a space saver, so balances up the chassis ;) :D

I'm using Morel Supremo tweeters in an active 3 way setup,
http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/gallery/watermark.php?file=5574
http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/gallery/watermark.php?file=5575
The tweeters will be getting about 150w RMS per side, same for the midrange. The 9" midbass drivers will be getting 300w RMS per side.
The front end consists of,
Morel Supremo tweeters
Morel Elate 5 midrange drivers (5")
Phoenix Gold Ti Elite 9M midbass drivers (9")

Damn, that's a sweet speaker set up. How do you mount the 3-way on your car? I may venture down the path of midbass woofers as my Focal components are pretty poor at that.
Cannondale99
21-07-2005, 12:20 PM
These haven't gone into the BMW yet, but I'll be fitting them the same way I did in the last car......time to get jiggy with fibreglass ;)
Tweeters will be in custom A-pillar builds, and the mids will be in builds just below the tweeters inbetween the dash and the A-pillars. The midbass will be in fibreglass door builds, just where the pockets are at the bottom of the door, and trimmed up in the OEM door card material, so it looks just like standard :)

No idea, but I'm sure I'll get something more or less exactly the same from a material shop, in my E39 5 series, it's like a black vinyl-ish cloth, pretty easy to pick up something exactly the same from a textile shop in the high street :)

One thing I would like to try is to mount the components on the door itself instead of the doorcard. Because it's a solid mount, the speakers will sound 10X better with much better depth and you gain mid bass.

Nick,
to be totally honist, I think you made the right choice in choosing the Polyglass over the Poly Kevlars anyway. In my opinion, the Kevlar midbass drivers can sound pretty smooth, which isn't a good match with the tweeters. I'm sure there are people out there who love the sound of the Kevlars, but I'm not one of them, Poly Glass all the way.....
I've known a few people who have mixed Focal with Phoenix Gold Ti Elite drivers, it does work if you get the imaging right (i.e., play about with various tweeter positions, off axis is usually best with the Focals.....), so getting a set of the 9" Ti Elite drivers which I'm using could work well with your Poly Glass's :)
However, if you're going to go down the midbass route, then I would advise you to go active.
Sorry to have hi-jacked your thread, I'll stop there. Hope the new amp brings good things :D

then I would advise you to go active.
Sorry :o what does this mean?
Cannondale99
21-07-2005, 10:20 PM
It means powering each driver seperately, i.e. you will need a 4 channel amp to power your front speakers, 2 channels - tweeters, 2 channels - midrange.
For this, you'll need an active crossover, which will have a highpass and lowpass for your tweeters and midrange. You need to highpass the tweeters at around 2.5KHz, so everything above 2.5KHz go to the tweeters, then lowpass the midrange at around the same, so everything below that frequency goes to them.
Hope this makes sense?
