Performance Figures?

Just reading a Car and Driver (I know) review on SC'd E46s, and came across the following paragraph:


With AA's claim of 318 horsepower onboard, its car ripped from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and clipped the quarter-mile in 13.9 at 102 mph. The numbers are quicker than those posted by the hottest 330i currently available—the 235-hp, six-speed-manual 330i with Performance package, which hit 60 in 5.6 seconds and turned the quarter in 14.3 at 97 mph—but still slower than the last M3 we tested, which met those marks in 4.8 and 13.6 at 105, respectively. That M3, like the 330i with Performance, was equipped with a shift-it-yourself six-speed, and since we've never tested a current-gen 3-series with an automatic transmission, a direct comparison is impossible to make. 0-60 in 5.6 for a stock 330 Manual? What is it the US market ZHPs have got, as I thought my manual 330Ci Sport was closer to 6.5. And 4.8 for an M3? I thought that was more like 5.6. Are these C&D figures accurate or is it downhill 1/3 mile drag strips with a following wind timed by wrist watch again?

Give it a few years and Disney will make a film of that road test, they like good fairytale.

A stock 330ci is 231 Bhp unless i'm mistaken. From 231 to 318 thats got to be more than just a SC, and you would spend so much money getting there , you could buy an M3 and a bit

If you read the recent test in one of the BMW mags Lee Nutalls car which if I remember it rightly is SC'd managed 5.9 sec and all recorded by GPS timer.

what do you mean by SC'd ? Supercharged?

Yeah supercharged. Just curious really, the figures the magazine quotes even for the stock cars all seem very optimistic?

The SC 330 in the above test was an auto, so you can take off at least 0.5/0.6 sec for a 6sp manual.

At Brunters, Lucky bob is right about the 0-60 but we were only givin 1 shot at 0-60, but also take into account that the csl's were only 0.2 quicker to 60.

An SC 330 is as quick as an M3, even quicker if you go for the higher options (upto 380bhp). And for less money. You just dont get the features of the M3, such as LSD, wider track etc

Pretty sure the Yank 330 ZHP has about 10bhp extra...and thats it

...is accurate? A stock 330 6spd will do 60 in 5.6? Doesn't feel like it!

Does seem a little quick. Although Evo magazine have tested one at 5.9. Depends how good you get the launch.

The US performance package 330i (ZHP) also has a different diff if I remember correctly. I have so far managed a 0-60 of 6.18 (6sp) with a full tank of gogo juice. How accurate that would be against proper timing gear is unknown as I used a G-Tech timer. Still reckon I could crack 6 secs. Also BMWs figures are for 0-100kph (62.5mph) and I am unsure if they need to shift to third to hit that speed as in my 330 I can do the 0-60 run in first and second - gets damn loud though :D

Yeah forgot about that, Mystic's right, the ZHP has the 3.07 diff, we get the 2.93:( .........................but we should all have the 3.46:D
