Yes another detailing thread!!! Saving for having car detailed before selling it in a couple of months. I really don't want to pay £250+. Is it worth me havin a go myself??? If so, please give me a 'basic' list of products I can purchase from local halfords.

Thanks in advance

TBH doing a full full detail will cost you MUCH more than £250.

To do the above minus the machine polishing should be do-able for £100 plus a day of your time.

VERY ROUGHLY dude:

Meguires lambswool Washmit £9
5x microfiber cloths £5
Sonus quick detailing clay £6
Poorboys spray/wipe £8
couple of drying towels £12
Wax £9 - Natty's paste wax
Polish £7 - A light cut so you can apply with microfiber towel easilly.. Don't get a heavy one or you might just end up scratching more!!!
Wheel cleanser and brush to apply £15-18
Wheel sealant (like wax but for the alloys) £12-£13
Terry applicator pads, £4 for 2 of them...
Couple of buckets

Then interior dash spray £7..

You can keep running and running with this. I think the above would do "everything".

I recommend elitecarcare very highly.

I want a paint correction detail to get rid of paint swirls and light scraches.

Best price I negotiated was £250 cash with a PCC detailer - which I thought was reasonable. However recently I was at my local bodyshop - This place is A1 for the standard of their work. I thought I'd ask the Gaffer whether he would recommend a detailer - he offered to completly eliminate the swirls through a series of rotary polisher work for £70. I may have to polish myself after.

Very tempted to give a go..

if there aint no major issues with the car paintwork etc then I dont think having the car detailed would make it worth more than what other similar cars on the market. better save the money for future car mods

I always wash/detail my car myself, its great fun and good exercise and make you understand the car a bit more :)

ditto for what mystic has said...

If you spend £250+ to get the car detailed and then sell it in a few months, then are you really gonna get more than you paid for the detail back??

I would detail if i was gonna keep it but would not bother if i was selling it, as long as the car is clean, tidy and well poished when you trade it in the most salesmen would not look THAT close for swirl marks. Every garage you go into 99.9% of 2nd user cars have swirl marks.

Save your money and put it towards your new car to be detailed

I have tried to search (honest) but very confused. Can someone do me a 'blow by blow' idiot proof way of detailing car i.e whats the two buckets method, clay barin' waxin'...what you use on wheels..engine bay etc....

Thanks

I would have to disagree, if you took a swirled but clean vehicle to one dealership for a price, then spent out £350 on a correctional detail and went back afterwards to another dealer then I'd guarantee you'd get double the cost of the detail back at least, not just saying this as it's my living, but talking from experience.:)

litchy I would have a go at it myself I think. It will cost you a bit to buy all the stuff you need, but at least you'll have the majority of equipment to detail the new car when it comes and future cars too!

It does cost a lot of money to have your car professionally detailed, however if you buy the right stuff i'm sure you could do at least 90% as good a job yourself. Plus you will have the satisfaction that YOU did it!

Use your now to car refine your technique for the new motor! Don't be put off by the horror stories of burning through your paint etc, while i'm sure this can happen, if you buy the right equipment and do your research properly you will be hard pushed to screw your paint up! (meg's g220 machine polisher)

Somebody once posted about detailingworld = retailingworld. It's very easy to get carried away!

My list is good enough to get you started mate! Just go order it all from elite and don't look back. If you have any specific questions then the guys on that site will answer :) I'm on there but don't ever post really...

Thanks the list is very comprehensive. I have looked but cant seem to find 'an idiots guide' to detailing. I'm trying to find a step by step guide. For example "whats the two bucket method???"

simply put you have your shampoo in one bucket and you rinse off in a second bucket. This makes sure any tiny stones etc plus obviously the dirt don't end up mixed with shampoo which reduced risk of swirling and streaking.
