No personal experience Mark but nice choice, `always wanted a White one when I was younger and mint ones haven`t aged at all. "The Polisher" had 2 when I got my wheels done, 1 as a DD and 1 showcar.

Its mainly rust to look out for mark and the roof which fail. My ex gf had one and they are very nice cars which would change you as liking verts! Here's one which looks mint:

I owned 2 MK1 GTIs (Lhasa Green and Red 1.8s, 1.6s are for poofs) and although it is very nippy I didn't enjoy breaking down several times on them, and the rust coming in from the sunroof seals, A pillars and boot lid seals. It is very basic so you'll get f-all equipment and the engine is very rough in modern standards, but town driving should be OK. I added Zender/BBS/Mk2 big bumpers on mine so it looked nice but I personally wouldn't go back to them as for me they are simply too old and unreliable. On the plus side, the accerelation is very quick (quicker than modern GTis I think) and it holds value very well. Maybe I had bad luck but I did have a lot of fun tho:)

my mate had a hatchback mk1 gti, very nippy cars but allways leaked water when it rained. Not sure if the convertibles have the same problem, but they probably must be a lot worse.

Watch out for rust. Good thing about MKI and MKII Golfs is that bits for them are so unbelievably cheap!

cheers

Get a mk1 Clipper Mark ! very cool !!

Look out for rust but also check gearbox and engine ! may have been reliable but they are close to 25+ years old now !

one good thing is that they are so simple to fix and have ample space in the engine room unlike modern cars. you can pick up a decent example for 1000-1500 nowadays so if you are willing to maintain it then I think it will be a cool car to own

Had a Mk1 Golf, all the above comments about rust and easy maintenance are spot on, I would personally go for a Clipper. :)

Brakes are a weak point on the Mk1s too - often the master cylinder/servo etc is swapped from a Mk2... A mate of mine has the white limited edition one, thats had the VR6 lump transplanted into it... :)
