Hi, I did read a post on this I found via searching but it was a few months ago so I didnt know if there were any further developments;
Is there a way to make your roof go down via the BMW remote control?
thanks! :)
Not sure about the BMW remote control but you can certaintly do it with an aftermarket alarm system. Clifford is one of them that spring to mind.
I would be interested as well if it can be done via the BMW remote...

No need to push it twice, just press the unlock button and hold it down. Takes about 10 seconds then lowers the windows to halfway, 5 seconds then lowers the roof. If yours doesn't do it then you can get the key programmed, it's a dealer option.
There's no way to do the reverse though, the nanny state forbids remote closing due to the thousands of people that get killed by closing their own roofs while their heads are in the way...
The battery shouldn't run flat if you drive the car often enough, doesn't take long for the alternator to charge 30 seconds of roof lowering. ;) I usually lower mine every day from my office window 5 mins before I leave to get in it (unless it's raining of course :D) and I've never had a prob anyway.

Remote feature only works on facelift cars.

And once again, the Fasmeister teaches me something I hadn't realised either...

It can be done, but your right. BMW have disabled it due to the nanny state etc etc. I've seen it done via a Clifford alarm. One button and it takes the windows and hood down, another button an it goes back up again... I'm pretty sure they use relay's on the total closure circuit to get it working. I know i can put the roof up or down by holding the key in the lock or unlock position in the drivers door lock. It's this part of the loom that the alarm taps into..

Is this something BMW could do to my car then, its an 2001 330 convertible?

Ade - Yeah the Clifford runs it's own circuits into the roof, so it can enable the feature and use the full functionality. I'm not sure BMW can even turn it on, I don't think the option is there.
Rob - Doesn't look like it, your car won't be a facelift on 2001. Best way to tell is to hold the unlock for 15-20 seconds. If the windows go all the way down then you don't have the feature. If they go halfway down and stop, then the roof is the next step if you keep holding, but like I say I don't think you'll be lucky. Don't give up hope though, you can get kits for remote roof operation without buying a whole new alarm system, they're usually less than 100 quid.

If i push and hold the button, nothing happens!
Where can the kits be got from?
thanks for the response :)

I'll try and find the link, but it's been years since I last looked at it. Basically the kit that was perceived to be the best one when I was looking was from the US and came with an optional add-on which also closed the roof if you left it open and it started raining. Was some clever kit. Just gotta find the link, unless one of the other guys has it hidden away..

Went to my dealer he looked up my M3 year 02. And looked at what functions it came with from the factory, this was not one of them  and they could not do any thing about it,so they told me?even phoned up some audio shops and they would not fit an after market alarm that can open or close the roof or start the car up because it was to involved with oem alarm. The wiring loom is complexed, thats what they reckon. if any one knows if this can be done and by who let me know please, may be a group buy :p
yea itop is the thingy in the US. Although it doesnt lower the window 1/4 inch when you open the door or something along those lines. Fas will know [ok.

If the roof goes up when you hold the key in the lock position on the drivers door then any Clifford installer worth his salt will be able to do it. It's just a couple of relays that send a pulse fooling the ecu to believe that you have the key in the lock.
Not run of the mill but pretty straightforward non the less. I have a mate that used to work in the industry and is clifford certified and he say's he can do it but is no longer in the trade and would rather not 'get his hands dirty' these days.
