Hi guys.

At silverstone this weekend (fri to sun) and loved every second!!! seats on start / finish line, opposite montoya's car.
I'll post pics and more info asap.
On the way home, about 10 miles outside portsmouth @ 115mph the tyre made a noise like when you go over cats eyes, was wondering what it was and about 10 seconds after that it was really loud and pulled very hard to the left, kept it straight in the outside lane while checking to see if i could get to the hard shoulder, luckily there was no one there so i slammed the brakes on and dived from the outside lane to the hard shoulder.
Was hard to control but just managed to do it. Front left had gone and after getting it of and checking it there was a hole about 2inch by 1inch on the inside wall. The tyre didn't have much tread on it so think that was why.
Ordered 2 new ones as the other side looked the same! Got 2 pirelle p zero's, not cheap!!!
Anyway it scared the life out of me, was doing 130mph 5 mins before!
I think if it had been a budget trye it would not of held together as well as it did!!!
I'm a lucky man i know...

I take it that your tyres were speed rated high enough for you to be doing those kind of speeds? Can't think why they wouldn't have been, but is just as likely to have caused it if they weren't (should be ZR rated but could be W as an alternative).

Yes they are zr rated. Dont know a lot about tyres but this is what they are - 'pirelle p zero 225 40 zr 18 92 y', (thats exactly what it says on the tyre)
I know the p zero is a good tyre! that much i do know!!!
What is the max speed on a zr? I thought i was fine because i thought the max speed on a zr was about 145mph?
Think it blew because of the tread being low, i'll take some pics later or in the morning and post them up.

ZR is 149+, more than enough to cope, although if your tread was exceptionally low then it may have been a factor. More likely you had some sidewall damage and that, coupled with yesterday's heat, coupled with the high speeds, probably was enough to push the internal pressures into wanting to be external pressures.. And when that happens and it can find a way through...[bang

For added fun, try it at similar speeds with the rear tyre on a bike. That was how I learnt to stoppie from 80+mph - there were pinch-marks in the seat where my bum had been trying to hang on... ;)

thats not good you were lucky as me and my old man were, happily coming back from grand prix, dad panics a bit i ask y while he's putting on hazards etc ! the ECU had only cut the car out completly at about 60mph thankgod there was a layby metres away so coasted into it no harm done, restarted it and all was well, an hour earlier on the M1 had it happened it may av been a different story!!!!, bloody fords!

 Damm you were lucky, could have been a lot worse.
For that sort of tyre to go there must have been prevous damage but hard to see as it was on the inside wall !

Pirellis are generally soft tyres but grip amazingly. You do need to inspect them more as they may look ok on the outside but the inner tread wear can be significant.

No not really!!!
Grand prix didn't go my way either! wanted alonso to win, think he's a good driver with a good mentality, he got nailed of the line which was surprising considering how good that renault is of the line!!! and button just didn't have the pace!
