Also the Porter Cable 7424 is an all time favourite.

AHH SOD THE ORBITAL....go for a rotary you will be far happier with the results,...bmw clearcoats are hard so you will need the umph of the rotary...dont be fooled, its easy to use a rotary, unless you are a retard you will not cock up!
go for a makita fella...

After weeks of reviewing I've just bought this :)

better than the megs and porter cable and not as harsh as a rotary. Works fine on hard paints and will do paint correction ;)

I have a single head buffer and polisher, if your not confident with it you could burn through your paint, and on edges you have to very careful.
I just got my hands on one from a company called Auto-smart, it's a twin orbital and is very easy to use. I'm very pleased with the results.

Having detailed my own M3 and now my 335i I can assure you a rotary isn't needed. A porter cable and some Menzerna IP do just fine!
If you don't know what you are doing a rotary could wreck the paint on your beemer

What else did you use with the PC?
Can you do a list of products needed for an E46 with good paint that just needs a light going over.
I highly recommend the poorboys stuff personally.. For the money its incredible. You can spend 8x the amount for results that are no better. Only thing I might buy different would be the wax.
Search my threads for a little writeup of a by-hand detail if your interested. Not a full correction but a reasonable attempt if I do say it myself :p

The best thing is the rotary i.e. the makitas even the silver line rotarys are being used by the professionals now the oranges ones though.. as they have better speed control
porter cables and the megs g220 is what the beginner should use imho as its not as easy as people think to use a rotary with a rotary you can cut the paintwork and de-swirl 10x quicker but you can make holograms very very quickly and you wont know unless you have the right lighting conditions i.e. flurescent tubes or halogen lamps direct on the paintwork to see the imperfections..
i have finally started using a rotary and its taken me over a yr and half to learn how to use it properly.. and even now i still hologram the paintwork depending on the hardness off the paint..
one thing i need to invest in is a ptg i.e. paint thickness gauge as you can then see what polish and pad combo allows you to achieve the perfect finish without taking off too many microns of paintwork.. always good to know your limit as clear coat in general is like 40-50microns thick on most normal cars
for example on a mistubushi evo and ferrari's etc some of the top end cars they apply the paint very thinly as in literally 20-30 microns thick and may be soft paintwork i.e. meaning with the general farcela products which most bodyshops use i.e g3 and that alone would take off 15microns give or take.. so may be risky hitting the paintwork 2-3 times any more you could cut too much and then your in trouble..
as usman says pop over to detailing world theres so much knowledge in regards to paintwork on there..
hope the above helps even though its not in much detail..

The throw of the makita's are around 0.5-1cm throw unlike the portercables which have up to 2.5-3.5cm of throw i.e. meaning more movement which is better for an orbital type machine...

yes I got it, great bit of kit easy to use and the car looked mint when finished although in this weather it doesn't last long, at least I know the paints sealed and good for some time.
The paint correction is spot on had a few marks on mine which it breezed and on my other it really did take a big scuff off the rear bumper :)

how much was it and was it imported from USA?

I bought a few bits and it was from Autogeek in USA, I got it delivered to a friends first in America to save on tax and shipping. I bought the kit as per the link, just short of $500.00 plus other stuff, I paid all in all £300 ish for kit when the pound was good and $110.00 shipping  , I also had some brake pads sent over so the package was quite heavy, hence the cost.
