Im currently looking for a 530D, but have started now to also look at the petrols as well. The only thing that is swaying me, is all the stories im hearing of reliability issues on the 530d motor. Whats the general opinion on this?
Obviously the diesel would return better MPG, but is that offset by the higher fuel costs these days? how bad are 530i's on juice on an auto car?
Tax is obviously higher on the petrol, but not the end of the world.

Any opinions greatfully received.

In all honesty, I think both have pro's and con's. What sort of reliability issues are there with the 530d engine? I have just bought one...lol

To be honest it is the same base engine as was in my 330d but with slighty bigger injectors, etc as it is now 219bhp as opposed to the standard 204 in the 330d. I tuned my 330d up ad took it round the Ring, etc and it never skipped a beat, so personally think the D engine is very robust.

Just heard alot of problems with turbo's/injectors, but like all things on the internet, I suppose you have to take with a pinch of salt.
What kind of MPG are you getting currently?

Currently getting around the 39 mark, but that is mostly motorway driving. Still on a par with the 330d which was a lot lighter by comparison. I think the whole turbo's giving up will actually only be few and far between (and this will happen within every marque/model - petrol cars included). The thing to remember on the net is that you will hear of all the cars that have problems but not much at all from the hundreds and hundreds that don't.

Also, forums and the like give you a very small segment of the population. I tend to look at it like this - just get whatever you want and deal with any issues when they arise (if at all). You can go buy a brand new Aston and it can break down on the way out the showroom. Personally think if you can find a mint car that has been looked after then hopefully you won't have a problem.

One last thing about the D engine and gearbox. Talking to a lot of tuners when i first bought the 330d, all actually said the 3.0d engine with auto box was one of the more reliable combinations to have.

Good luck with the search.

If you want something quicker to drive most of the time go for the D. Map it and it will be quick.
