Drove the 330 today for the first time with the std air box back on in place of the GruppeM. Couldn't believe how pish the car sounded.
Anyhoo, now the M3's coming I need a bit more growl to drown-out the 2,000 nails stuck in the cyclinder head.
I read somwehere previously that the only thing that stopped BMW putting a V8 in the E46 was the poor cooling properties of the engine bay.
I know there's a big difference between the detriment to performance of heatshield/cone combo's (K&N 63) and the closed/cone sysytems (GruppeM).
Anyone know if a system is available in the UK that will give me the induction sound I'm looking for without ramming hot air into the engine? Also, any sound clips would be magic.
Cheers.

The GruppeM looks the biz but it is as quiet as the stock airbox (after all, the design is the same but just the panel filter is replaced by a cone filter and the body is CF instead of plastic).
Open filters gives the loadest induction noise. You can't beat the K&N Typhoon. Most awesome sounding induction (bar the CSL) on an M3. However, you may get a bit of heatsoak on very warm days.
The best alternative is to go for something like the GruppeM on a 325/330. Teddy sells them in M3 fitment. Albeit softer, you still get the induction roar and less heatsoak.

agreed with peppernick-ive got the typhoon fitted and it sounds amazing! i fitted it during the hot spell we had recently so i didnt really notice how much heat soak there was untill driving it in colder wether-it does drive better when its cooler. but the noise is great so i think its a fair trade lol
id definatly recommend it

Matt, how easy was the typhoon to fit? i.e. would it be easy to swap back to the std air-box on a regular basis?

very easy about 45mins the first time you fit it, but you can do it in about 30 mins

Hmmm. Would rather get new (although I did apprecaite the old GruppeM Nick! Do you want to buy it back? LOL) but, can't seem to find anyone in the UK that sells it. The Typhoon kit only seems to be available for the Mini in BMW's range.

just to confuse matters ....
we have succesfully adapted active autowerke E36 M3 CAIS to the E46 M3 ...same principle as typhoon but with MUCH better heatshielding ....this is how extra power is mainly produced , by insulationg the filter ( genuine K and N ) from the heat wash of the engine bay .This heatwash is aproblem on open filters whatever the outside ambient temp pretty much ......
