Does this signal the end of the joy of motoring as we know it?
In 10 ten years time will we all be drooling over some sort of advanced battery powered M3?
Is it just another con from the government to get people into electric cars for free only to find out they cost more to run than petrol equivalents?

It was also revealed yesterday that inventor James Dyson is working on a fast battery-powered car with a solar panels. At the moment, electric cars can only go around 30mph
so its going to be across between a hover and a car, great

Hi
the fact is petrol/diesel engines are on their way out, most of us will see at least the beginings of this within our lifetime.
The technology to produce powerful, long lasting batteries has been around for decades ( have you ever seen the military using rechargers in battle for their comms equipment etc for example? :)) but has been kept under wraps so corporations can get the most profit for longest remaining time on oil products and "existing" battery technology from the mainstream marketplace.
Hybrid cars have recently been shown to be LESS economical or "green" overall than petrol...for now.
At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy nut (must admit I am a little), fuel cell technology is also far more advanced than generally seems to be known, but again being kept under wraps.
I am willing to place a long term wager that, just on the cusp of world oil reserves being delpleted, a wonderful "new" fuel technology will magically surface, fully developed, ready to go, and costing a fortune for decades to come.
Only time will tell what will really happen I guess....

I wonder how many of these UFO sightings are fuel celled/elecrtic "aircraft" ? Silent and shed loads of torque from 0 rpm.

Just like the when the electric tooth brush oral B first came out. It was good, till the next model came out, then the next, then the next. Better models everytime. They have the best model, still to come. They have already made it, but why sell it now? You keep buying newer and better models, ergo, they make more money. If they sold you the best model now, what could they sell you tomorrow?
Same with the most popular computer technology.

yeah I'm pretty sure the oil companies have a whole load of alternatives lined up (IIRC they have bought many of the patents for alternate technologies?)
