One of my mates over here in Jersey bought something like this, was a little plug in unit that he can cancel warning lights and read fault codes with, I'll ask him tommorow what hes got and let you know, he bought it cause we all hate the local stealer

Wow £200, that would sting you paying for a simple serial cable and a burned cd! If you do buy one, fancy burning me a copy and telling me which pins are wired in on the cable? ;)
Seriously though, are you going to try it?
Justin.

Not at the moment, but it is something I would like to think about. If I heard that it was good stuff, I may be tempted. Right now however I have to fix my poorly car :(

Just made a post with my problems, didn't mention the oil consumption worry but that can wait!

This software does look great, but I think I'm looking at least at a head gasket, so that means $$$$$$$ :*(

TO be honest I have not a clue, the radiator went which looked like overheating or overpressure, but there is no sign of either. It's started drinking oil like a fine wine but there is no smoke from the exhaust or mayo in the coolant/oil. The engine does seem a little rough down low and I keep stalling it, specially when reversing (maybe just me). Compression is low on one cylinder by the looks of it.
Sounds bad :(

just been reading up on your troubles it seems you lose a lot of oil in so short time with no signs how i personally before takein it any where would do compression tests again and add tests to determain rings or gasket which if im right you didnt do first time you allso mention a little oil at the back have another look might be rear oil seal but not yet seeping out allso is your intake system oily

Well I took a look at the possibility of the intake being oily, but it looked pretty tough to get in there, so I thought I should leave it and let the garage look at that.
I took notice in the compression test, at one point it almos tseems like I was going to get 0 compression for the low cylinder, however like I said because of the deep plug holes, there was really no way to tighten the tester, so that cylinder may well be fine bit the thread a little dirty hence not making a good seal. Again I think that the garage will be able to do a better job here with the correct tools.
If it doesn't cost me too much (as in under 4 figures) then I will be happy to have the garage do it and know that the problem is solved, and of course I will expect the work to be under warrenty, if they charge me for stopping the high oil consumption and it still drinks oil, I will be right back at their door.
If it's going to cost any more than that then I think just replacing the engine with a low mileage one from a wreck will be a better option?!?

justin some people would argue but i would say rebuild your bottom end if you face the possibility of an engine change this ive done a few times and allways felt good for it think about it chap first there so many plus points to this it may not be as exspensive as you think

Ok, I'll see what the verdict is once it has been professionally diagnosed and see what the options are.
If I had a big garage, all of the tools (crane etc etc) and a few weeks off from work, I would do anything myself, but I don't unfortunatly

That software looks cool and it would be very handy to have but that is a lot of money. If its copiable, maybe a "group buy" type idea might be worth it? Split the cost between everyone who is interested and each get a copy?
I think really that amount is only feasible if you are going to use it for a business venture or something similar, but it would be good to have.

you can also try www.peakeresearch.com (self encased tool).. or www.auterraweb.com for palm based pda's or http://www.autotap.com for windows...

Would that AutoTap programme accomodate bmw specific settings like the auto door lock over xx mph for example? Or would it be a matter of you finding the right bit of data to modify manually?

Don't know, I think the ebay one lets you. There seems to be a box of tricks with it too, so depends what is inside.

how about this group buy?? for the ebay item it will save us money in the end im sure of that!!! ive actually got all my lights stuck on on my dash AIRGAG BACK LIGHTS ECT so a little tip for you all isif you unplug such items on your car DO NOT turn ignition on before there plugged back in

Well I would love to go for it, and take apart the box of tricks and see if it can be replicated, but I think I may be cleared out for a long long time. I could just about afford to by me dream car (well not dream car, but one I have wanted for a long long time), having whatever is wrong fixed will clear me out.

Yeah, I dunno, everyone but the actual buyer wouldn't get the cabling and all the other bits and we are presuming it can be copied, you might not be able to. I would love to but can't afford it atm, it would definitely be cool to have.
