help pls with ignition

i have a '99 323 Ci. when i put key in ignition and turn to 1st position the warning lights will not come on all the time and if i go to 2nd position the car will not fire up, the starter turns but no engine start. if i do it maybe 8-10 times the lights will eventually come on and i can start the car.
if i waggle the key sometimes the lights will come on quicker.
Can anybody help pls or will i have too remove and replace barrel, i would prefer not to do this, thks.

Worn ignition barrel I would say. May not be turning the switch on the rear through its electrical circuits.

probably need to replace you electronic ignition switch, common problem on E46s
