Hi all,

i'm just wondering do any of you E92 owners have problems with camber on your cars?

my car is eating through the very inside of my tyres, both front and rear extremely excessively.

BMW say that because my car has M sport suspension that it is normal.

i argue that there is no way i should be changing 19" run flat tyres every 8 - 10thousand miles (again, front and rear) because of this.

i will try and get a few pics up later on, but as mentioned, they are being eaten on the very first inch of the inside of the tyres, with very little wear anywhere else on them.

my mate has 19s on his 350z and lowered 50mm and it doesn't go through tyres like mine!

so what can i do?

thanks in advance

Not much help, but every BMW me or my family have owned has done the same in the past 20 years.

If I get 10K out of a set of PS2's on my M3, I don't consider that "bad".

When I had my 330ci I had the camber set up to try and correct the inside wear but the handling went to fu*k.

From what I know (not much) in general, most cars that have been set up for front grip (minimum understeer) have agressive negative camber up front, amongst other appropriate settings. Great if you're going round corners but when not (i.e. motorway) inside of tyres wear harder.

I'll let someone who understands these things explain, but this is from that fountain of knowledge, Wiki-pedia:

Camber angle alters the handling qualities of a particular suspension design; in particular, negative camber improves grip when cornering. This is because it places the tire at a more optimal angle to the road, transmitting the forces through the vertical plane of the tire, rather than through a shear force across it.

Another reason for negative camber is that a rubber tire tends to roll on itself while cornering. If the tire had zero camber, the inside edge of the contact patch would begin to lift off of the ground, thereby reducing the area of the contact patch. By applying negative camber, this effect is reduced, thereby maximizing the contact patch area. Note that this is only true for the outside tire during the turn; the inside tire would benefit most from positive camber.

this is going to sound stupid but do you have the correct tire pressure?

Not on stock suspension, even M-Sport.

If the inside of your tyres wore out a lot more than the rest of the contact surface, your alignment is out; especially if you only drive 'normally' on everyday roads.

Nick's right, on my E92 M sport I've done 6k & the tyres are not half worn yet overall, the only uneven wear is the outside edge of the fronts due to roundabout cornering ;)
Your alignment is out so it needs sorting ! If the car is still under warranty get BMW to sort it FOC as the tyres are the proof it's wrong !

My original Bridgstone RF tyres had 14k on them before I replaced them (with LMs running Falken FK452s) and when I removed them I was shocked at how little they have worn despite having been to the Ring twice and they have definitely not suffered any odd wear to the inside of the tyres (and my car has been lowered on H&R springs for about 10k miles now)...

I would get a KDS done at BMW to get it sorted mate

BMW are talking shite. It needs an alignment. Don't bother with BMW and their take it up the arse prices for a KDS. Get it to a tyre center that has a hunter machine and get it done properly.

guys - thanks so much for your help - i'm going in to an indy now to get my alignment checked out - then on to BMW to claim for new tyres!

i'll post up some pics later to show you.

thanks for the invaluable advice from all you guys.

my rear tyres have probably got 1mm of tread on the insides and goes up to 5mm or more in the centre. i take it its a bad thing? cars done 8000 miles....

bmw are set to have negative camber from factory but this should not cause excessive wear on the inside of the tyres, unless car is lowered sigificantly. if you are running on factory mtech suspension and this happens, then obviously the alignments are way out but I don't think bmw would give you new tyres as it is car owner's responsibility to check the alignments and tyre pressures regularily. especially for cars running on large wheels and low profile tyres this put much more stress on the suspension components that the alignments can go out very quickly even you drive normally.

I'd always suggest people to get alignment checked every 6-8 months to prevent uneven tyre wears and to ensure the suspension components are in good nick.

KDS is only necessary when you feel that your car is really way out of alignment. in most cases a garage with the laser hunter machine will sort out all the alignment issues.

all the best

KDS this Tedster!

rears with 5k on them:

fronts with approx 20k on them! ( i know it's good considering the miles, but the fact is that there is so little tyre wear anywhere else compared to the insides shows alignment way off):

i called into an indy today who confirmed that alignment is way out - told him not to touchit, i'm going to dealer tomorrow with problem after speaking to them today.

my biggest gripe is that car was in for service last week, and for the 2nd time, no mention made of poor tyre wear or dangerous condition. last time i had this problem, i had a rear blow out on me!
