Well its been on the cards for a little while warning signs like the battery light flashing but today the alternator finally said goodbye. Checked the charging voltage and it was down to 11.2 with no ancillaries running
On the bright side I didnt have any issues ewncountered by others of lights packing up in the dark wipers shutting down etc so I think myself lucky for that. It's now at the garage and the work should be done in time for Bimmerflex. I am wearing my quick release trousers though for when I pick up the bill.

I hope your battery didnt die fully!! The mark 4 sometimes busts, when it loses power while the red lights on.

At least its not my Mark 4. :p No battery was replaced a month ago cheaper option than the alternator. Soon as it happened went straight to the garage so its cool :D

we did one at work, think it cost £326 for the part from BMW before our discount. Expensive, but i have heard horror stories of £500 for the part alone!
cheers

You should have bought that one I was telling you about a while back mate! The M3 I got my mirrors from...
Anyways, hope you don't need to use the 'quick release'.

Mine went a few months back and I broke down on the way to work, luckily I had a portable jumper pack in the boot so hooked that upto the battery and got the car to work and even more luck came in that my boss had a car battery charger in the office (We are I.T consultants) so ran a huge extension lead outside and put the battery on charge so I could take a risk and get the car home which I did.. I just bought a unit from a refurbed unit the next day and fitted it that night, cost me £167 all in.. Got a 2 year, 30k warranty too!
