Was wondering if it is possible to fit a M3 Gruppe to 325??

I doubt it very much mate. I have seen the M3 unit and it looks a right monster in comparison to the standard 325/325/330 units.

Someone will be along to give a more technical reason no doubt. But I do know this, the 325 Gruppe M won't fit an M3.....so the other way round is also very unlikely

The size of the inlet manifold on a 325 is smaller than that on a 330, the M3 one is much bigger than that of a 330. Also, the MAF housing on the M3 mounts different to the way it is mounted on a 325/330. In short, if you're into customisation, it may be possible but certainly not bolt and play.

fyi ...we have adapted a gruppe M E46 M3 centre intake type system to a 330 before ...looks good but as Nick says , quite a bit of work .

I am not convinced by power gains either ....we have found these intakes are actually quite restrictive especially once debris piles up inside , as it invariably does .

anyone else share this opinion out of interest ? GrpoM claim i think 18 bhp or so on an M3 ...but I just cant see it ...most we saw on Noble rolling road was 4 bhp ?

In fairness tho dyno can never replicate true air flow , however big the fan in front of the car

I think the 'trouble' with the M engines is that they're already wrung to the max, so you have to spend a sizeable chunk of money to see anything noticeable really (apart from maybe a really good re-map). CAIs don't add a huge amount of power in the first place, although Roy's bang on about the airflow on a dyno in my experience, but I'd be surprised to find 18bhp off just the CAI, centre intake or not.

You may find that the centre intake will help funnel cold air into the intake and maybe pick up a little power on a non-M, but you're still not talking massive power gains on those so even a 10% improvement is only going to be the odd bhp or so extra. Better off spending the money on a cleaner exhaust or a re-map imho if you're after a better power curve.

Of course, if you're just after a rare mod, then hell it's worth the effort and you'll have a lovely looking engine bay at the end. :)

Roy, has anyone tried removing the intake on the M cars leaving only the exposed throttle bodies (filter covered of course) and running an aftermarket ECU to get rid of the MAF sensor? Surely that would release more power?

Heh heh, modding is all about putting an idea into practice. Anybody wants to give it a go, let me know :D , I'm more than happy to get my hands dirty ;)

you guys are nuts ....but what a WICKED idea ......

I think you will need to go Alpha N on the dme and work off throttle position sensing in absence of a MAF , and wil need dyno 'ing after . After all that it may not work anyway ...:)

As it happens we have just taken a booking to fit CSL style carbon airbox WITH MAF and A N management to E46 M3 , we will be posting details soon and dyno graphs .

supposed to be worth 25 - 30 bhp ...we will see .......

Interesting filter comparison for the E46 M3, GruppeM, K&N etc

Now THAT is a good link Lee ....interesting reading , first time Ihave seen dyno show more than 10 bhp for gruppe M ...and that was12 bhp AT THE WHEELS ....which equates to aprox 14 at motor ...very close to Gruppe M claim of 18 bhp .....

hmmm........
