I am old enough to remember when creativity was more than just how much you had in your wallet or maxin' your credit card\overdraft. So much can now be bought of the shelf.

In my opinion the modded cars that are held in high esteem are generally the cars that have had proper money spent on them. Equally car makers have now realised that they can offer cars very close to how we would have moddin' them anyway. Look at the option lists of even Fords and Vauxhalls...you can put an 18' rim on a corsa!!!!!!

Even on this forum (and I'm equally a victim) its so difficult to be different, big wheels (look good but why does everyone go for BBS LMS), lowered suspension, carbon bits.... I've thought about buying a E46 M3 but its all been done and I feel I would be just following in the footsteps (as great as they are) but following none the less. It would just be a carbon copy of something done 2 years ago. Even though I'm doing it for me, kind of takes the fun out of it when you can see how its gonna turn out before you start it!!!!
In 12 months the forum will be full of new M5's as it was 12 months ago of M3's. Great cars - its so difficult to be different!!!

Its always been hard to be different and stand out from the crowd but the internet has made it even harder thats all !!

Buying from the states has been made easier so everyone can purchase the same mods.

I remember when i went to Live93 with my dad there was a guy there who had a vhs player and tv linked up to his massive sound system !! Back then he was the man but now you can buy a tv HU from halfords for £150

I think years ago the major mods were done on the engine rather than stick on kits !!

But when you buy E46 and E60 BMW's you are starting with a higher priced car to start with so you're never gonna start putting loads of fibreglass on it and adding 30" wheels so it ends up loads of people all looking similar !!

I;d say that nowadays its definately less is more

its all about the individual.. no matter what you do.. if you like it then go for it... you will be surprised by the outcome, i no i was..

so what if its been done before.. im sure you can find a way to put a twist on it..

Its true, and being different is generally not well accepted by the mass followers of the "norm"

when was the last time you spotted a hardcore heavily and tastefull modded E46 M3 on the road?

everyone on the forum has it does not necessarily mean that everyone in the UK has the same thing does it :)

I cant remember the last time I saw a modded M3 at all, let alone a hardcore one. The most ive seen is a bit of debadging!
Forums make modded cars seem a LOT more widespread than they are.

I fully agree on the forum thing, but its less exciting when everyone on the forum has the same thing.

Still gotta mod though.

I think it's hard to be different on here because everyone on here has good taste lol. When you mod a car you want the best looking pieces available, and majority of members here are able to kit up their M3's or M5's etc with these parts. Certain rims, splitters etc are popular on here for a reason and that reason is they look the best, there's no point buying a part which is different to everyone else on here but does not look as good.
We get a skewed view on this forum as there are a lot of nice cars all nicely done up, but on the streets how common are they? I have not seen a well modded M3 in a long time. It's just the fact that on this forum there is a high density of nicely modded up M3's which makes them seem common.

its so difficult to be different .....
It's difficult because you are restricting yourself to what everybody does.

The driver and how he drives the car can make it unique ;)

I am adopting a new approach. Instead of throwing money at my cars like what I have done in the past, use the car in a way that makes it stand out from the rest.

It doesn't have to appear in magazines, nor does it need to be on a show stand. But it will certainly put a smile on your face.

Don't see many of these doing what you did with it today......

Totally agree, before I used to want to have the car that completely destroyed the show, getting trophies, magazines were nice too, etc.

Now I couldnt really care less, plus magazines I used to really enjoy have gone downhill (PBMW is one I can think of, I still buy it as we dont get a lot of English mags over here, plus its BMs), Ive actually chucked out most of my trophies from shows as they were collecting dust, the ones I still have my son plays with, and believe me theyre not pretty anymore.

I miss meets as there's none here, but the competitive shows Ive certainly grown out of.

I used to do a lot of the bodywork prepping and general stuff on the cars myself, I still do that as I greatly enjoy it, it was always for me but shows played a big role, now its just for me, as I still cant live with a stock car.

End of the day you need to figure out why you do it, I do it for me and seeing a another modded e46 m3 is quite rare, happens maybe twice a year for me.

Do what you like, internet hasnt made it easy to be unique 100% but there's always a way to make the car your own, and have those little things that make the difference.

I agree with a lot of the comments, why not buy the car you want and love to drive, mod it in a way that suits you, you won't see hardly any other E46 M3s out there modded in the same way.

The forums generally have like minded people on there who have done this and that to their car, doesn't mean you'll see their cars on your daily drive, chances are unless you go to all the meets you won't see other modded cars in the flesh, so you'll see a lot more pictures of cars and what people have done, doesn't mean you are copying another persons ideas, a lot of cars on various forums have given me inspiration more than anything to get certain bits and bobs, chances are if you mod your car in whatever way, you'll very rarely see one done in the same way on the road.

For me, I love the way my car looks with the CSL flippers and carbon grilles etc, I see 3-4 E46 M3s every day on my daily drive and they look at me like i'm driving some ghastly monster...at the end of the day I think my car looks great

I hardly see any modded M3's out there, apart from the few people I have met on here and on the other forums.

You think it's hard being different with a BMW..try having a Golf...LOL.

But to be honest, it has mostly always been about the under the skin mods anyway for me. I do prefer the Wolf in Sheeps clothing concept and as said it is how it drives and handles and what I can do with it that makes up for anything else.

Even if you do want to do the same things that others have done, well go for it, and I guarantee you will not see another one on the roads except for at meets, etc. In the grand scheme of things, there are a handful of modded M3s and M5s actually out there (it's just that their owners are all on here..LOL).

I have never seen another M3 like mine because i've styled it to my tastes and imagination. Sure I have LMs but they were the only rims I could ever imagine on my M3. Joe and I have similar mods but our cars together give a beautiful contrast  cos we have done our own variations on each mod.

I love seeing other M3s on the street cos I know mine is a one off, and stands out the crowd as an everyday motor. It's only difficult to be different when you listen and do what other people say you should do to your car. If you mod your car to your own tastes it will always be a one off, because no two people will do the exact same custom mods.

I think lots of people have hit the nail on the head, we get a little spoilt on here looking at modded cars all the time but outside of the forum I hardly ever see any modded cars and I travel all over the country and hardly ever do less than 1K miles a week.

When I do dig mine out of the garage it attracts loads of attention wherever I go to the point where its a little embarassing sometimes.:o But its not just a UK thing, even on the `ring trips everybody stares at the convoy when we pass through the towns. :D

Have to agree with MikeM on some points there, I dont see many modded cars, when I do they are mostly chavved up rubbish.

When I got my E36 (i was after an E30, couldnt find a decent one!) every Tom, Dick and Harry were doing M3 body kits lol
I looked for a boggo one, no M3 kit and just added a lip up front and changed the rear spoiler. Over the last 3 odd years ive slowly modded it to be different from everyone else...and still going lol

Everyone will be different from someone else in someway.

If you truly want to be individual, then what you need is an interior like this (straight from the local Raj)! All enquiries to Justin. :D

This was actually a courtesy car that said member tried to give me, complete with LPG conversion that consisted of a Cala gas bottle in the boot.
