Fork in a tin can

The M3 makes this noise under harsh acceleration. Today i heard an E36 (non M3) with an aftermarket exhaust make this noise.

Is there any way my 318ci sport can make this noise, even with this aftermarket exhaust.

Hey matey, you talking about the sort of harsh raspy noise that the exhaust makes? Cos mine doesn't make a noise much like a fork in a can and if it did I'd be taking it into the dealer lol.. :D

I'm pretty certain that it's the exhaust. One of the guys like Nick or Teddy or Roy can probably answer it straight off the bat, having played around with such things way more than me, but it sounds like an exit noise rather than an intake noise. It may be the resonators/cats giving the effect more than anything else, in which case a replacement pipe may get you close to the same sound, but the guys will be more clued up than me and I'm sure will be able to give you a better answer than this rambling gibberish I'm writing :p.

Im no expert but i think it might be down to the fact that its got individual throttle bodies and revs over 8k. A 330 with an M3 exhaust would not sound the same. I Could always try it............;)

The rasp is characteric of the E46 M3. It's not the engine or the intake, but the way the exhaust gas is vented and the resonance it generates creating a specific sound wave. The mid-pipes, kats and exhaust manifolds are responsible for this noise. I know what you mean about similar noise on the E36 but it's not as characteristic as that on the E46 M3. The E36 6-pots can be made to sound remotely similar with an open air induction, but the E46 rasp is purely exhaust.
