I haven't done this before, as all my previous purchases were from DVLA.
Advertised on Pistonheads. I spoke to him on the phone today. Paypalled him £200 deposit and he said he will send the papers off tomorrow to put me down as a nominee. Once he gets the papers back from DVLA (1-3 weeks), he will fax me a copy to confirm. Then I will paypal him/bank transfer the remainder money. Once the money clear, he will send me the original documents via Special Delivery.
He owns www.regs4u.com (looks legit)
So I will still be down as a 'nominee' ? When will I get full ownership rights to the cherished mark? Have I missed any steps?
:)

You will be come the owner, once its on a vehicle on your name...
If your not gonna stick on a car straight away, get him to sign the change of address part and change the address to yours (its free) so it will be his name, your address.
Everything seems ok, but personaly when ever i buy a plate privatly.. i do the exchange in person... once i hand over the cash, i want the certificate straight away..

As above. :) Easiest way (if he`s not too far from you) is to meet at a DVLA local office and asign it there and then and you can give him the cash.
If your paying a deposit by Paypal Nick, I can`t see him Stiffing you as he`ll still be shiting himself in 6 mths time incase you file a chargeback.

It will go on my car as soon as I get the papers.
I insisted on using paypal to pay him on multiple lots. He is happy with it. We've negotiated to share the charges 50/50.

What I meant was if its already on retention, you don`t need to be added as a nominee, you can both go into a local office and assign it straight to your car and it imediately becomes your property then. ;)

I don't think it's on retention, as I have to pay £85 DOT and £25 DVLA change of nominee fee.

I think the name on the logbook and retention cert has to match. So Nick would still have to added as a nominee

Hi Nick,
Its a fairly straight forward process - he needs to have the reg on a retention, and have you down as the nominee.
The £80 fees are to remove the number from his car, and the £25 is to have it put onto a retention as opposed to have it transfered directly to another car.
The name on the retention certificate must match the name on the logbook of the car it is being assigned to - ie Nicks name as it appears on his CLK logbook.
Do make sure the seller signs the section at the top of the right hand side of the certificate, which says assign the number to a vehicle.
Once you have the signed retention certificate with you as a nominees, take it along with your logbook, MOT and road tax disc to your nearest DVLA office and they should be able to assign the number straight away, and give you a letter authorising you to make some plates up - and will issue you with a new tax disc straight - a replacement mot (if applicable) and the new logbook will be sent to you by post. There will be no cost involved in this as it has already been paid.
Hopefully, that explains the process for you.....

LOL :D ..... I saw that, not good especially in the specialty I'm in
It's nothing interesting, just a smart and short dateless reg. Got it at a good price, should be able to sell on for more unless the economy really crashes.
My first 'investment' mod ......... must be getting old

Nick, I have just sold a number plate to a neighbour and it took 6 weeks for the final document to come through, my neighbour was OK as he knew I was going no where. It may take longer than you think ;)

I'm in no rush, afterall the final payments will be sent once the proper documents are with the seller.

What happened to th Evo7 plat you had on evil d? Have you still got it?
Do you lose a plate if your car gets nicked with it on? (sorry never come across the situation before)

I still have it (took it off the car 2 weeks prior to it being nicked) but I'm superstitious. I will never use that plate again, but I'm not selling/giving it away ;)

Didnt think you would be, just wondered what had happended to it!
Why are you superstitious about it though? You took it off before it was stolen so it is lucky ;)
