with all the news on new road charges i think it is stupid cars are no longer a luxury my car is a way of life and could not cope without it it clear that labour do not want cars on the road it pisses me of when you see tony blair and co gettin out of posh gas guzzling jags at downing street if they are that botherd about polution they should use 1 ltr fiesta instead no they wont do that cos fiesta arent good enough for them. Prices range from 2p per mile up to £ 1.40 per mile it would cost me £600 to get to pod before i even fill up with petrol the labour party are a total joke we need to make a stand now fcuk off blair and his scum bags

LOL, dude, BREATHE!! :D Long since been the case that Bliar and his cronies will use 'environmental motivation' to basically extort craploads out of Joe Public and beat them into pedestrian submission, amazed me that he got re-elected but tbh they've probably laid enough foundations now that anyone would have carried on. We all doomed.

Instead of discouragin us to use cars they should be encouragin us to use other forms of transport. It's completely arse about face.

The problem is that public transport in this country has a stigma of cheapness and ultimately crapiness attached to it eventhough it isn't THAT bad.

I've used the train service around here quite a bit (before I had my car) and they were pretty good. I know it's a difficult kettle o' fish in built-up areas but if they could sort that out and get more people using that then people would naturally use them instead.

Alternatively, and a bit outlandishly, get people to have to retake their driving test every 10 years. So many people would fail that the number of cars on the road would go down and eventually everyone would drive better. The time it takes that to happen gives the government plenty of time to sort the transport system out and it does actually force people to use public transport. In being forced to use it they may realise that the stereotype attached to it is not warranted and use it more frequently.

Thats my 2p... :)

I've worked on the government lorry vehicle charging project (Thales Telematics bid consortium) over the last year due to start in 2007 which will charge lorries by the mile they cover on any road in UK.
The main reason for this is that nearly 70 % of lorries in the UK are foreign registered & therefore do not pay any Uk tax for wearing out our roads - thats approx 400,000 vehicles inc the dreaded 44 tonners.
Maybe if they sort that properly, us motorists will get a reasonable deal if we pay per mile especially if they remove tax from petrol @ approx 80% ? :)
This will all be done by either onboard vehicle GPS telemetry or Microwave tagging from beam points beside roads.
You are due to be watched & tracked ???? :(

If they take off the tax from the petrol and the road tax altogether it may stand to be accepted. They're saying they may do this, which means they won't. It'll just end up as them adding another tax on so they can make more money off of us.

Not to rant, but a lot of other countries seem to be able to manage, why can't we?!

I don't live in UK and I don't know how your politics system works ,Why would the your government spend money to take more money , They should not use the money you give them to take more of you ,it ridiculous taking money for the mileage your doing in your car it'll be like renting the car from the government the more miles you put on the more money you pay, It just doesn't seem right.

But lets face it, they will never be able to put this into action even within the next 10years. I used to have a Thales tracker in my Zafira, which i could log onto the net and find my daily route, speed and mileage. What else would the goverment use this for? Speeding is my main concern, as soon as you go over 70mph....bang 3 points and a hefty fine.

But in 10 yrs there will probably be away around it................hopefully.

Lee's right, I have had a Thales unit & sold them for over a year now. Some of their capability is already....

Total Stolen Vehicle (SVT) Recovery, tilt sensor, mileage, distance location etc - last one I did was recovered after being stolen in the center of Birmingham, tracked, located & the gang of 5 arrested & 6 other stolen vehicles recovered within 25 mins of being nicked !!!

Total Vehicle Management, Tax, insurance, servicing, history, mileage, speed, engine on, engine off, conjestion charging, bridge tolls, residents permits etc

Total Driver Management, route driven, heavy braking & accelleration, speed & location, rest breaks, expenses claims, sat nav, traffic reports, geo fencing etc

All these are also capable of covert fitment & original manufacturer install from new to any vehicle, car, lorry, van etc

Currently the government are evaluating via white paper & outline bidding process which system, what they require & how to introduce it & the costs associated with it.

It unlikely to use 80% of this capability, as the focus is on foreign vehicle use in UK, road & conjestion charging & illegal vehicles. The rest is far to contraversial for them, however if you have a company vehicle your employer can ?
eg:- I had to do one recently for 5 builders vans recording their break times sitting in the van without them knowing by door and engine activators !! :(

PS: I have now left the industry for obvious reasons being a petrol head :D

hmm.. not completely for this new charging system yet, unless their reduce the petrol prices inline with charging £1.30 a mile in urban areas, can't see this taking place, with high petrol prices and new road charges, suddenly £165 annual road tax charge seem ultimately better value. :(

It has to be one or the other I think, but as usual, they will want both and probably end up getting both too.

The government are just f**king wa**ers!
Whatever happens there gonna f**k us over - SIMPLE

If this happens i can see big protests! 100 times worse than a couple of years back with the petrol prices.

We gotta make a stand...

When does it end???
