Congrats! One of the few 'milestone' mods. Once you've done it, you will never go back to stock brakes.

I am so sorry mate - I was absolutley lampooned with pranksters, scammers, you name it - that I never even answered/used the phone when it sold.
As a matter of fact, I presently do have an Oyster card - but am hoping for something that will bag a few more ladies (other than pensioners who I regularly give up my seat to)! No word yet - want this to materialise first lol
Anyway - sorry for hijacking this thread - I really like the Vorsteiner/carbon fibre on those calipers!
Edit: I agree - I don't like OEM/Stock calipers painted - leave them be :)

There's only one answer .......... ;)
haha going to have to try it sometime. £1000+ for brakes, just the front, only necessary if you drive fast, or do you recommend it for everybody?

To be honest, I don't really drive fast or track my car, more of a cruiser. I mainly bought them for aesthetics, but knowing you have a set of big anchors in the front is always a good thing no matter how you drive.
Improved braking performance is always a plus for street and track driving.

Mate, your dream car is my dream car. The colour and the mods you have chosen work together so well. Its gonna be one hell of a car when you have you ice in and it's all finished. Do you think you'll be keeping it for a while or will the you miss the modding?

Its getting to be a hard choice. I'm thinking i might keep it for a long time, getting a bit too attached to it! My dad kept his E21 323i for 26 years lol, i don't think i will keep mine that long lol but if things plan out well in the future and i can afford to keep hold of it as a project car then the modding will continue.
On the other hand I may just keep it for another year or so and enjoy the mods for a while and sell it on and start on the new M3, i saw a black 335 vert down my road this morning and it looked sick! lol, very tempting.
I'm really keen on doing some serious engine mods to my M if i do keep it for a while.
They are one of the finest looking BBKs....proper drool worthy. You really need to do the rears to match though as painting the existing calipers will look nice but compared to what's up front.....

I might just leave the rears as standard. If i paint the rears, when i eventually sell the M and take the BBK off, the fronts would also need painting otherwise it would look crap. If I keep the M for a while, i'll definitely get a set for the rear, but probably just get the standard red brembo instead of having the CF inserts.

Unfortunately one of the calipers has a slight finishing issue with it. The adhesive they used to attached the CF insert wasn't cleaned properly off the surrounding front and top edges of the caliper. I got some clear glue marks on it, and can't seem to shift it.
It's a shame, i wanted to get them fitted soon, but now might have to send it back to USA and wait for a replacement :(. Its a very minor problem, but annoying. Anyone know how i could shift it? Try Autoglym Intensive Tar remover. Put some on a cloth, then using a circular motion, rub over affected area. The stuff is non corrosive, but has always managed to shift even the most stubborn stuff. You can buy it from Halfords.

Hope fitting goes well, i never owned a set of BBK before, will be interesting to feel what stopping power the 6 pots produce (after they have been bedded in properly of course ;) ) don't want any warping going on lol.
Give them a good testing back down the M4.
peppernick
20-03-2008, 10:49 PM
You'll find the 6-pot very progressive, your brake pedal travel will increase (much bigger calipers; hence more fluid to shift). I found the 6-pot Brembo not as snappy as the OEM on my Z4M but they are a lot more consistent with heavy use. The pedal feel doesn't change.
You need to get use to it. I wouldn't be surprised if you report back saying 'I need to press harder to stop the car with my Brembos!' ....... that's the new pedal feel you need to get used to. But they do stop the car.
The 4-pots on my CLK are snappier. The StopTechs ST40 calipers bite the hardest.

Make sure you keep working them hard regularly after the bedding in. I`ve been nannying mine too much and I think whats happened is the pads have wiped away the pad layer on the discs, the next time I`ve used them hard then its left uneven pad deposits and trying to shift that to re-bed them in is difficult to say the least.
Here`s a very good write up on discs from the late Carrol Smith
http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_warped_brakedisk.shtml
and a propper bedding in write up
http://zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm
You might struggle to get any brake fade by stopping from 60, in fact it just wont happen, not even after 10-12 stops. Double the speed and you should be there. :D

21-03-2008, 08:43 AM
Ok, you may wanna hava a look at my post
http://forum.evotechnik.net/showthread.php?t=20785&highlight=bedding
See the pad layer transferred on the braking disk?
Though its not BBK, you may have an idea where to try (or not to try) proper bedding in when you are done at Maybank ;)
At the end of A3290 there is a chunk of road after the slip road towards Reading leading to the business park with a roundabout at the end and there are literally no cars there. I managed to do 2 stops before that roundsabout and 2 stops after.
You should have seen the face of that BMW driver who saw me from behind braking several times very hard without any reason. :D

Do I have a challenger for the most window-launching calipers available now? ;)
As Mike says, these brakes are designed for consistency at 3-figure speeds, you won't see any fade at 60. Likewise, you won't see much heat transfer either, which isn't always a good thing. They need a properly thorough work-out now and again to keep them tippy-top, and that means driving out of town and practising a few standing-on-the-pedal moments, but if you keep them exercised then they'll out-perform pretty much anything on the road bar ceramics.

I drive my car everyday to work, even though its mainly slow drive, i do get on to some A roads which let you get up to 60mph. So brakes should get a good run everyday, but additionally i will take it out and give them a beating once in a while to keep them fresh and clean. I have axxis pads all round at the mo, so hope the rears will be able to cope with the bashing every now and then lol.

Ive seen something like this on M3forum once, where everyone was saying they are the wrong way round, but they werent.
Normally the vanes that scoop up are are supposed to face to the front of the car, check that, and if its the case it should be fine. If they are facing backwards they are on wrong.
You should also be able to check in your Brembo instructions. (On saturday when we put mine on, we also got stuck for a sec seeing as we didnt have instructions and where wondering what way they go on.

They put the spacers on the front initially, but i convinced them they were supposed to go on the rear Andy swapped them over after, top bloke. Maybank stock the different length wheel bolts and they couldn't cut mine as they are hardened. I still have your ones in case you need them in the future.

The drill pattern is not important, the direction in which the cooling vanes spin is (helps significantly with cooling).
Pic taken from Stoptech's site.
http://www.stoptech.com/img/aerorotor.jpg
The disc above should spin clockwise
Double check your discs. Brembo usually drill their discs in the opposite direction in which the cooling vanes run; unless they've changed their manufacturing pattern.

Just had a chat with Andy at Maybank, he told me that he always installs them that way and that all Porsche Brembos go on like he has done mine and he also followed the labels on the rotors.
Andy, he will be more than happy to swap them on mine if i want, but as they match the rear OEM pattern i think i will keep them like they are. But i'm going back there on Saturday to get some other issues sorted, so will decided then if i want to swap them over.

he vanes inside the disc are there to allow the hot gas out as it spins not to "scoop" air in.
As the wheel spins clockwise the vanes inside should be facing the other way.

Brembo label every rotor with a directional spin arrow. If the arrow is pointing the right way, the rotor is installed correctly. ;)

Any idea where this label is supposed to be m8?

The stamp is usually on the inner hub of the rotor, though not all models are stamped.
For slotted discs, you need to install them with the outer edge of the slots hitting the pad first, regardless of vane type (the bits between the two disc sections, for non-techies).
For drilled discs, it's the the drilled holes that are completely irrelevant and it's the vanes inside that dictate how to install them. For straight vanes or pillar vanes it doesn't matter, for curved vanes you must install them with the vanes running back from the inside to outside diameters in the direction of rotation. This is why all Brembo drilled discs are generally fitted the opposite way around - as all 3 types of vanes can be catered for that way.
In reality, on the road, it doesn't matter. You won't generate anywhere near the heat or gas build-up that will affect a vane exhaust problem. But if you want to get it right, and who wouldn't, then the above is how you run them. :)

Ok I will check tomorrow as Im not sure now, the drilled holes are installed like Nicks, but not sure on the vanes now.

If yours are drilled then yeah ignore the hole pattern and check the vanes - if they're curved then you want them curling out towards the edge of the disc, whereby the centrifugal effect will pull the gases and heat out of the centre of the disc. I thought Nick's pic was of a slotted disc at first :o, but yeah it's vanes and that disc should indeed rotate clockwise to get the effect. If you can see all the way down, then you've got one of the other two types (less common now though and never on GT models) which means you can install them however you like. :)

Here's an example:

See how the vanes are angled at the edge? In this example you'd install the discs how Hidesh's are - driver's side on the left as you look, passenger's side on the right of the pic. This is the usual install direction for drilled Brembos, certainly GT specs, which is why we always do them that way. :)

Just read through 25 pages of thread over on M3forum, and the general consensus is that on the Brembo 355mm discs the drill pattern should be going frontwards and the vanes to the back of the car.

That's a decent pic above actually, shows the vanes well. As to the drill pattern, I will 100% guarantee you that with drilled discs the pattern means sod all - the direction is governed totally by the vane direction. Having said that, I can't recall the last time I saw a Brembo disc with curved vanes where the pattern did the opposite to Hidesh's in that pic, but in any case the pattern is a by-product of the rotor installation and not a factor in it.

Cheers m8, I know the drill direction means nothing, the thing is apparently Brembo drills in the opposite direction of the vanes whilst Porsche for example have the drill pattern in the same direction as the vanes.
This is also why people that have a lot of Porsche experience tend to mount the GT discs on other cars "the wrong way around".
I will go out and check mine later but they are like Nicks.
