Firstly Hello to everyone I am new here and I know you all love to see pics of peoples rides, I will get some up in the next few days.

I picked up my Year 2000 BMW E46 328 CI Coupe (Manual) which I am very pleased with. (I will post some pics soon)

The thing is I have a few problems already which is a bit of a shame.

1) The engine is making a ticking sounds like the tappets used to on my old 2.0 8v Golf Gti. Its not very loud but constant and the faster the car goes the faster the tapping sound is. the car has done 61k. Could the tappets be on their way out ? I can only hear it when the Windows are down, but you know how it is.....strange noises are annoying. Any ideas would be great.

2) The major issue is the Accelerator Pedal is very stiff and might need adjusting if possible, I picked the car up which was fine (private sale) and when driving home....I pressed a little harder and the pedal stuck went down and held there sending me flying off from 30mph to 75mph in a traffic queue on the motorway!!........luckily I managed to pop it back up and break in time. Will I need a new Cable ?

Thanks all and sorry to bug with new questions already

Welcome to the forum mate.

1. Don't know, sorry.

2. Is it possible the track the cable sits in needs regreasing? By no means sure, but its a thought.

Welcome again,

Shuriken.

Hi mate and welcome.

Not sure on the first point. could be anything mate.
The 2nd point however i have had a similar problem. My car is also E46 328i on V reg (2000) but its semi auto. The accelerator pedal in mine is quite stiff, when i brought my car i said i wasn't happy with this and they checked it out, come back said ok, i still wasn't happy and said i wanted a BMW garage to look at it, they to said it was fine. Its never stuck! thank god.
Its stiff but the first inch of pushing the peddle is soft/spongey, which is normal (so your foot can rest on it without accelerating). then it becomes a bit stiff. I prefer it like that, my girlfriends clubsport is soft as anything and ya just gotta touch the peddle and your airborne!!!

Welcome m8 to the best forum, :D

I had the same problem with my 325 which turned out to be the throttle actuator (I think that's what it's called) needed replacing as it was knackered & stiff ?
I would get your local $tealer to check it for you.

Someone should warn you that this is a dangerous place with no pics!

Thanks all for a friendly welcome and trying to answer my questions.

Black328i, mine is also a V-reg 2000 e46 328i, does your engine have the slight tappet noise at all, or is it just me ?

P.S, pics are on their way ...soon :D

:gforce:

there is a slight noise, but its not as loud as yours, cant hear it when driving just when the bonnets up! it is only very slight though! might just be me being paronoid! you got me worried now mate!
The accelerator prob you got could be serious, get it checked mate asap. Mine was checked and i was told it was fine, but mines not as bad as yours.
But i might get it checked again by my local BM dealer - just to be safe!

black328i, sorry buddy, don't mean to worry you in anyway. I am one of the fussy sods that gets annoyed with slight rattles, creaks and knocking sounds.

Mine is only heard when window is open or bonnet is up. Just seemed to sounds like mk old MK3 2.0 8v Golf GTI which are known for having slightly noisy hydraulic tappets. Didn't think the 328 would as it's only done 62k.

Well my car is still under the extended BMW warranty and it's now booked in for next tuesday to be looked at.

Sorry if I worried you mate, I am sure your car is fine [ok

welcome dude [ok. Loads of reasons why it could be ticking [hmm. I remember searching fanatics a while ago and they range from the vanos to belt tensioners aswell as using lower octane fuel if i remember correctly. o and spark plugs [hmm.

As for the stiff pedal yea i have that but it has never got stuck other than when i turn off cruise control and it needs a little force to get it loose [hmm. I think it was mitsu who had his replaced for some reason. Sure he be along to tell you about it :p. I reved an M5 a while ago and i was like  so easy.... but thats an //m ;).

sticks back on low revs.I will see what I can find out
from my mate who works for a local stealer.I'll let you

Welcome mate.

I wouldnt worry about the tappet noises unless it is excessive.

Couit be just the hinge on the pedal is a little stiff and not the cable.?

The noise described sounds very much like the solenoid in a charcoal filter, which takes unburnt fumes from the engine cycle and feeds them to the intake for better economy; usually noisier after you've been caining it, sounds like a click click click?

welcome buddy:) I had my pedal replaced as it just became too stiff and the dealer said it was a common problem, although I felt he shouldn't have said that in front of his colleagues with a look of a 'Yup, I'm brilliant aren't it?'. I did everything I can to lubricate whatever was making it stiff but no joy. if it's still under warranty, complain and get it replaced:)

Well, just got car back today from dealship.

Warrenty covered the dangerous sticking accelerator cable and now it feels like new. Anyone that has a really stiff cable/pedal or has similar symptoms like me I seriously suggest getting a new cable fitted it feels so much better and I don't have to put my foot down that hard to actually get it to move now :)

They seem to think the ticking problem is nothing to worry about but at least I made a point that if anything did go wrong I would be back.

Thanks to all members that gave advice on this one.

Respect
