Cars that do less than 35mpg should be banned by the EU, the ex-chairman of oil firm Shell believes.

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart told BBC news that motor manufacturers would be able to adapt to tougher environmental rules.

Sir Mark said: 'Nobody needs a car that does 10-15mpg.

'We need very tough regulation saying that you can't drive or build something less than a certain standard. You would be allowed to drive an Aston Martin - but only if it did 50-60mpg.'

Sir Mark disagrees with the argument that drivers of more polluting cars pay their way through higher road tax and fuel duty, arguing that the wealthy should not be able to pay their way out of taking responsibility for climate change.

'It is a social thing. We don't say the wealthy can avoid doing what is needed by society.

'When we eliminated coal fires in London we didn't say to people in Chelsea you can pay a bit more and toast your crumpets in front of an open fire - we said nobody, but nobody, could have an open fire.

'When we introduced catalytic converters the car-makers said it would put the price of cars through the roof - but it didn't. Now we all have to have catalytic converters - that's only right.'

The proposed 35mpg rule would only apply to new cars and old cars should be allowed to die off eventually, he added.

There's to much of a industry for these under 35mpg cars, i doubt they will pass this regulation.

I may be wrong, i may be saying this out of place.

But did you hear him say this when he was chairman of shell, when he was making a tidy profit out of the Aston Martins doing 15mpg.

Bit of a change of heart.

Maybe i'm wrong though.

I totally agree, and also that no supercar should cost more than £10,000 and should do less than 35.1mpg.

There, all sorted, and just as likely to get passed through Parliament.

Oil rules the world and pays for a lot of it, it will be along time before petrol dissappears, the government make too much out of it!

In the US all the cars have stupidly large engines. if anyones is going to get rid of oil in the future, its going to be america.

!!! what a bollocks idea!! so whats going to be left on the road? 2.0litre diesels?!!
but then again, you can say, a 535d will do 36mpg average,
but it can also give you 12mpg when you drive it hard?

yea sounds to me like hes upset that shells making $1.5m profit an hour without him.

I think everyone is missing the point he was trying to make though. He thinks manufacturers are deliberately not making a majority of cars as efficient as they could be (high costs would be my first guess) and figured by imposing limits they would be forced to. I have no idea about where the world is technically at producing fast high mpg cars so dont know if his point is valid at all.

...or maybe shells secretly been killing anyone making advances and now hes feeling slightly guilty? (ok maybe i just been watching too many movies :D)

But you missed out the vital part.

He wanted the new faster cars to be limited to 100mph!

can you imagine... Supercars like lambos limited to 100mph:D

 My bad for not reading that part. lol now thats not good. What would be super about the supercar then?

Why not go all out and just ban cars completely, and all aircraft, and why not all forms of transport, I mean, when we say we dont want pollution, that means EVERYBODY doesnt it, not just people in Chelsea with their supercars :p
