Guys just wont to know how fast has any of us gone in our M3s. Because i was on a nice long road A130 the new bit and i put my foot down 1,2,3,4,5, didn't go into 6th gear, when i looked down i was doing 165mph in 5th,slowed down after that. Also i know the M3 is limited to 155, has mine been taken off? :)

Wow dude 165mph.
I keep hearing people say that the revs are limited in top gear to 155mph, but it cant be because i hit the rev limiter in 6th on Sunday Dont know how fast but it was over the 155 mark :D

My rev needle did bouce before the rev limiter on the way back from ASA last year at 155MPH dead. That was my 330ci.

Just a thought, admitting you were going over twice the national speed limit, identifying the road you were on and on a public forum? Not the greatest idea really

I've spent a lot of time on tracks and plenty of time on the roads in the last 20 years. Personally, as used as I am to driving at track pace, and as impossible as I find it to drive at 70-80 for more than about 3 seconds, I won't play at those sort of speeds on the roads. Too much can happen in an uncontrolled environment especially if you're sharing it with other drivers who aren't thinking along the same lines as you. Sorry if that makes me sound like a boring old fart, maybe I am. :o Certainly 10-15 years ago I'd have given a different answer, but there was way less traffic then and you could get away with way more speed on much clearer roads, I used to do some seriously crazy stuff on the bikes in those days..
Generally I'll hoof through 1-2-3-4 and then use 5th for cruising and/or 6th if I'm in petrol conservation mode. I'll always end up cruising within reach (one side or the other) of the big round number at the top of the speedo, but I very rarely go far beyond, not only cos I'm too road-aware for my own enjoyment but also because if I lose my licence for more than a few weeks then the job goes byebye aswell..
i read top speed is 128 on mine... i doubt thats a restricted speed :p. Ive cruised at 120 (on a private road officer :D).
i've done 173mph on the autobahn in germany last year, but slowed down, as i saw some cars further ahead and didn't want to risk anyone or anything.Got to around 6.2krpm..
rev limiter i believe kicks in at 7.2k
uk roads, never been over 70mph.. thats scary enough with the cars i've seen on uk roads imho. :p

They only limit 6th gear, 5th can go higher. Strange i know, but that is just the way it is on BMW's

If you can hit 165MPH then it must be de-limited.
How do you like the SS X-pipe? Any major difference in sound?

Yes Nick a lot better, when you go through town and the car is warmed up sounds DEEP it does turn heads before i get to them. :cool:only a bit of rasp when cold. :)
The day I picked up my Zed, I hit about 145mph in 5th... with plenty of revs to go... and i've even got a 6th gear... what a pointless gear! LOL
Don't forget, the speeds coming up on your speedo aren't actually correct... I'd say allow atleast a 5-10% leeway on either side...

I heard somewhere that on the M3, you get into 6th it stops you at 155mph, then you downshift, it lets you past 155mph, and then at the red line you shift up again, and you can get Max Speed!!!!!!
Had mine at 155mph.. no limiter, but then only have 5 gears, and you are already in the redline with no where to go. So guess they don't bother.

I read a thread about a year or two ago that reckoned BMW speedos are mentally accurate and always show 2mph over. I've actually tested this with a Garmin GPS and I was bang on 2mph over from 30mph up to 90mph. I'd almost guarantee that they won't be able to keep that up all the way to 155+ but you never know, they're certainly pretty damn tight up over halfway to it..

yeah, had mine de-limited , the speedo is way out on mine... had it at 180mph on the clock but the origin b2 was showing 169 :(:( :(:( thats the fastest i've taken it so far.. bu she felt like plenty more beans left and it was only at arond the 6800rpm ish was more concentrating on road ahead. as u see a car in the distance an .005 seconds later ur by it!!! (this was all on german autobahns)

Speedo's are around 10% out... you really notice it at the right side of the dial.

I think it's a fair bit higher than that. ZX9R rider got snapped at 169mph last year, it made the national papers. :D

What if you up change to 6th after you hit beyond 155MPH?

The TVR went through at 171mph but the next one down went through at 149mph so the threshold could be anywhere inbetween really.
