...for the pushchair, baby seat etc. And the baby isn't even here yet.

So might have to return to the BMW fold

Thank God 5 haven't sold the original wheels this time (cheers for the advice wifey!)

Ok, so I need a 4 door estate or hatchback, for less than £20k, which is fast, fun, moddable, probably German, less than 4 years old, with a warranty and not a diesel.

Don't really want another 5 series, as much as I liked it want something different! And can't stretch to a decent X5.

330 Sport Touring?

Or

Audi A6 Avant?

Audi S4 Avant?

Audi Offroad Estate thingy?

What do we reckon fellas?

mmmm I would say the S4 avant, but I don't think 20k will get you the new shape so I will take that back!

Get a 330d Sport Tourer - you can't go wrong!

How about a turbo-charged Volvo estate or C70 (4 seats with huge boot)?

I'd deffo consider the 330 Sport Touring or the A6 Avant. The S4 Avant would be preferable but with only a 20K budget don't think you'll get a newer one.

hiya mate,

No S4 Avants out there for 20k, but there is a 2002 3.0l quattro A4 Avant, fully loaded etc, for 18k on the audi used car network..

Or if you go for the diesel variant.. little remap with a chip should give you a nice increase in power ;)

Lexus always scores high on reliability and I have never heard of it breakdown! Have you see the dash on these? It looks like an Omega watch, it's brilliant!

For a fast estate, how about a Legacy GTB (2litre twin turbo boxer engine, 280BHP, Bilstein as standard)!!!

"Audi" all day long. Sell a kidney and get an RS4. ;)

Thats a point you can get an RS4 for under 25k now....if you can stretch I say thats the one to go for! [cool

20k is the absolute max - and not a diesel!

And must have xenons and heated seats (the missus doesn't care what car I get as long as it's safe, comfy and has heated seats)

Certainly hadn't considered the Subaru or the Lexus - they both come with loads of toys and decent engines - have requested brochures for both :D

Keep those suggestions coming!

Volvo is interesting too - don't know how much of a driver's car they are though?

Yep.

The RX300 SUV looks well specced up too, but not that fast.

Hmm - anyone had a play in one?

Yep, Lexus SUV is a bit of a pig to look at I agree, but might be moddable!

I would have thought an M5 would be nice? you can pick them up for that nowadays. It'll fit the kiddies and their belongings.

First choice would have to be the 545 tourer, absolutely lurvellly but very expensive :(

not sure where you are in the "buying baby stuff" process, but instead of looking for a new car, look at the stuff you're buying for the baby.

For my son, we looked at the "mama's and papa's" range of "travel-systems" and we have one which folds, umbrella style, and takes up the same amount of space in the boot as a set of golf clubs. The baby seat, rear-facing for 6-9 months doesn't have to ever go in the boot, that just stays in the back seat. and perpipherals go in and around the pushchair. I've got a 3 series convertible, never had a problem once with going away for a long weekend with the boy. 2 adults worth of luggage, full load of baby luggage etc and still journeyed in extreme comfort. Just takes a bit of careful planning, but from experience, you don't need an estate car........yet

M5 would be nice, but do want a hatchback or estate - we will be moving to a house that needs a LOT of work so the car will have to be a load lugger too! And don't want to worry too much about servicing and other enormous bills.

Glad you like the trim Tin!

Saw one of those Lexus SUVs today in the flesh - blergh - don't think so.

Needs to have 5 doors Fas as the mother-in-law has MS and uses a wheelchair, so needs to have the room for that to on occasion.

Not that I'm too demanding...

Thinking towards an E46 330 Sport Touring now - best looking of the bunch, certainly moddable, bit cheaper now the new model is out, and should be fun to drive, and not too grown up

Anyone driven one? Will most spoilers, angel eyes and other goodies fit ok?

Heart over head, and I heard one :D

It is probably the best sounding and handling car I've owned, but just not large enough :o

Sorry Tin, just don't want another 5!

A4 Avant is still quite tempting, but think I'll have a drive of one and a 330 - there are a few on the BMW site for 19995 with leather but not that many other toys, so will keep on the hunt :)

Didn't realise they'd stopped making the mean looking T5 Volvo - they look all podgy now :(

But look at the spec on this - it's every toy you'd ever need  Good call Nick!

lexus is300 (http://www.lexus.co.uk/detail?template=/lexus_2002/hitlist_detail&vid=10013340&vids=9845934,9309681,10013340,9650491,9930037&vidindex=2)

Have just had it approved (due to the spec list!) by the missus - she's not best pleased I want to change the car this quickly, as she didn't want me to sell the BMW in the first place :o

And I really should be concentrating on getting our new business (due to start end of July), new baby (8 days to go) and house move (who bloody knows when) so although I will of course be modding it, that might have to be pushed to one side for a few months!

But I will of course be loitering here, asking advice and contributing useless comments as always :D

I remember having this conversations re MKIV Golfs a little while ago. I sold my 4mo because of the baby. I now have the 330i saloon and it is like the Krypton factor getting the wheelchair in the boot. My advice would be get the wife a cheaper larger car and keep the R32 to have fun in!!
