My e46 SK+ is unlike others I believe as the previous owner did some research, and rather than drilling the oil pan, they had a welder modify the dipstick tube to allow for the oil to drain into the dipstick tubes extra port.

As anyone else done this with their SK+'s???? Generally any thoughts, is this an acceptable modification????

Thanks in advance.

I can't see this as being the most efficient path for the oil to take. The sump is obviously where all the oil is and where it can flow from easiest. I would be happier with having the feed from the sump rather than a dipstick tube.

ESS TX - kits ( with the ASA turbomex S/C) utilise the dipstick for oil return.
I had one in my car for a year and did not have any issues. Its very easy to fit and remove.Just make sure that the S/C oil draining tube isn`t kinked and follows the path of least resistance to the dipstick;)

These kits have been around for a few years now and oil return is not an issue - check out e46fanatics to verify this......

No doubt it works but what is the reason? Or is it just to avoid drilling the sump?

We took my sump off, and had the oil return drilled and welded in the proper place. Its a days work, but the issue is drilling the sump with it still on the car, wich i would never do. Some people i'v heard say that if you drill the sump in place with oil in it, as soon as the drill penetrates through the oil will rush out and stop any metal from entering the sump. But never the less, this would be a no no for me.

I manage to contact the previous owner. He said it was done to make fitting the charger easier and I suppose removing it too. He went on to say that its common practice with other SC manufacturers. I think most of us ideally wouldn't want to drill the sump. Said it was almost impossible to get hold of a dipstick tube.

Cars with mechanic so not sure whether I should refit it the 'proper' way or leave it. Don't want it to come back and bite me where it hurts!!!!

Only problem i could see, is if the flow is restrictive.

Simpson also modify the dipstick rather than drill into the sump, i think its make removal of the S/C easier in the future should you wish to remove the kit and sell the car on as standard.

removing is easy from the sump. all you need is a plug for the sump where the oil rail connected in from the SC.
