View Full Version : Questions about new rims

I am currently in the process of purchasing some new rims for my ride. I am looking at a set of 18" CSL reps as I prefer the ride on 18s and I can just transfer my tyres (save a little of the hard earned), before everyone says go for 19s :o .

Now my questions are, Joe at hyperturismo has a set and they are 8.5x18" all round with a 38mm offset. As I currently have the MVs and they are staggered - 8x18 with 225 tyres (f), 8.5x18 with 255 tyres (r), will the reps look good? Not sure whether the front tyres will look too stretched over the 8.5 wide rims and also whether the fronts would look like they fill out the arch more than the rear because they are wider than normal and have the same offset as rear.

Any advise would be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Raj

255 will be fine on an 8.5" rim. Not sure on the offset but 38 you should be ok. Are they the velocity reps with the dish at the rear, if not id get some from the states, they look way better.

Not sure who the reps are made by, but its whether the 225 will be ok over the 8.5" rim. Also, no dish on the rears as they are the same front and rear.
Getting them from the states would be good in theory but it might be expensive?

yeah sorry :o not sure on the 225. Mine are 235 so you might get away with it.

Contact Phil D he was arranging a group buy for the velocity rims from the US. From what i seen they were very cheap and US customers seem very happy with the build quality etc.

225 on a 8.5 I don't think will go dude, so you'll need at least 2 new tyres.
If your after the stagged look, get a 10mm spacer fitted to the rears ;)

What tyres you running? Certain makes have fuller sidewalls and can stretch more.

225 fronts and 255 rears should fit the 8.5" wide rims, but personally I would opt for 235/40 fronts to give a fuller look. If you have Falken FK-451, 225/40 will look very stretch on an 8.5" rim. Michelins, Yokohamas will look spot on.

Like Lee said, just make sure you get the ones with the rear dish. They look much better.

Non dished replicas

@Tin. Will PM Phil_D about the Velocity's.
@Harsha. They do come with 225 / 255 tyres but with the MVs they are only 8" at the front. So no need to play the girl card yet ;) .
@Nick. I have 225 (f) and 255 (r) pilot sports so I guess they should look ok. But from the pics you posted I will deffo look into the Velocity's as they do look sooooo much better.

Cheers for all the advise.

I have been in touch with the Peter at Velocity about their replica CSL rims and they are a very good rim but the they are 8.5x18" front and 9.5x18" rear. Is that not a little excessive and won't the 225/255 tyres be a little stretched over the width of the rims? You peeps with 19s, what width are you running and what size tyres do you use?

my 19" are 9.5 at the rear with 265/30/19 a bigger tyre will fit so i may go up whenthe rear tyres wear down or i get bored, up front i have 8.5 with a 235/35/19

Thats just it Kav. You are running slightly wider tyres than me to start so I think my tyres are gonna look stretched unless someone is running the same size tyres as myself on the same width rims I am looking at. I can't afford to change the tyres straight away but when they need replacing then I can go with a wider tyre.

Also Kav, what offset are your 19s mate?

255 18" on a 9.5" wide rim will look stretched. You need at least 265/35 or even 275/30.

Saying that, OEM M3s come with 19x9.5 and 255/30 rear tyres. So it can be done but not too sure how it would look on 18".

Bit difficult there but the main attraction of the staggered Velocity wheels is the 9.5" rears give you the dish.

I know Nick, the dished rear is whats swinging it for me even with a 225/255, 8.5/9.5 setup. I think seeing some of the pics from fanatics cars the 255 on the 9.5 doesn't appear to look that bad but the 225 on the 8.5 front does look a little stretched. But then this will only be until my next round of tyre changes then I could go 235 front and 265 rear but only if I woun't have any issues with rubbing???
